Thanked: 7ATG or not
Wtg,xtg,ATG that's the general look at it. Does anyone get a clean shave by just going wtg?

I always do two passes WTG and a touch up ATG. some spots just WTG. never could get the hang of XTG and where i can it doesn't seem any closer.

Thanked: 4828Well for the most part it is all about what the hand can do and the face likes. We all have to do a little experimenting to find our most comfortable shave. My first pass is mostly against the grain followed by a with the grain but only in the mustache and goatee area and then an across the grain pass. 2 1/2 passes and I get a very close and comfortable shave. It is not likely for everyone but that is what works for me.

I shall repeat here the mantra of SRP: YMMV
It's a difficult question to answer. What is a 'clean shave'? Do you mean compared to what I used to get with a multiblade thingy or an electric? Then yes. Do you mean compared to a 3-pass WTG, XTG, and ATG shave with a straight? Then no. But others will likely have different experiences.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 7I have been doing 1wtg 1xtg except for neck where I do 2 wtg with my IBC w/ feather AC blades and get a nice clean confortable shave. With my straight it's a liitle different on the neck I either have to do 3 or more with the grain or 2wtg 1Atg. So far and the comfort has been hit or miss. I getting another razor and getting mine rehoned to check if that's that issue so far.

With a couple of razors, I can get 90-95% of my face BBS with one WTG pass. I've always attributed it to the sharpness of the razor and that's typically how I judge my honing progress. The other element is how long the BBS lasts. Seems to last the longest with the sharpest razors as well. Never used a Feather straight to confirm this theory but a new blade in my DE lasts longer than a blade with two or three shaves on it.

Thanked: 98Here I go again, touting the Gokumayo 20K, even on the Gold Dollar razor like object, the shave was Perfect and could have been done in ONE pass, so, until I get an G20, I may not be happy or as smoothly shaved as that experience.
When painting cars, you put out 150% and you can get close to an 100% paint job, the prep, technique, and execution.

Thanked: 171To my way of thinking, WTG, XTG and ATG are theoretical concepts.
In practice, they can rarely be fully implemented as facial features don't allow it.
My first pass is generally WTG, my second pass is generally ATG, and then I follow with a final touch-up on jawline and chin.
All of the above have also an element of XTG, resulting in a close, comfortable two-pass shave plus touch-up.
Could I do it with the first pass alone?
I don't think so.
