My Father, who barbered back in the late '60's and '70's taught me how to shave with a SR. And he INSISTED I used both hands. He even insisted I used both when using a DE. As a result, even after many years of not using a SR, when I returned to it, I didn't even think about using only my dominant. It just felt 'normal' to use both.

My Father, however, when shaving customers used only his dominant. But, both when shaving himself.

[QUOTE=Porl;1687612]Why not try something like lathering with your left hand, QUOTE]

It's funny you say that. If I try to face lather with my left, it's like I have a retard hand. It just don't work right!

    Makes all sense to me.

I never spend much time thinking about it, but - unlike when I use a safety razor - for a straight razor shave, the required movements naturally lend themselves my use of both hands.

By comparison, moving around a person in a barber chair gives the barber a wide range of movements and there is no need to use anything but the dominant hand.

So - unless I have an out of body experience - I use both hands for a straight shave and my dominant hand for the few times I use a safety razor.

For lathering, after an accident years back that somehow slowed the wrist movement on my left hand, I use my dominant, right hand sinceI found no benefit using both.

Funny thing is I have been shaving with a straight for the past 30 years, but have never really given any thought to using both hands. Creature of habit I guess. Might just have to give it a try.

Lather right and shave with both.

I tried going dominant hand once but gave up and used a DE (dominant hand only) until the non-dominant hand healed up.

Dominant hand only, never needed to use any other method.

Because I was born with Erb's Palsy in my right arm/shoulder, I do everything left handed... I WISH I could use both to shave with... but if I even try to write with my right hand, it looks like a 3 year old tried it... My arms look fairly normal now, and can use my right hand/arm, but I don't have NEAR the dexterity... when shaving, I use my right hand to stretch the skin... but I dare not try to use it holding a razor against my neck!
