IF your edge is good, don't do an ATG pass. Those can irritate your skin a lot.
As a beginner, you may not get a BBS shave for some time.
Also, strop, strop, strop and strop some more
I do 40 on the linen and 100+ on the leather before each shave. But your technique has to be good.
Stropping smooths out the edge of the razor and hence, a more comfortable shave

Good luck you've been given a lot of great info to work with here

When I'm done, pretty red, breakout wherever I go up and can't shave for a few days till it calms down mostly my problem areas...chin, neck and cheeks. The side of the face if not an issue at all.
What else can I try? Is it technique or just my skin? I do get that whenever the barber does my neck too and whenever they use an electric razor on my head to tape it down, my back of the head and side still breaks out a few days so I'm leaning towards sensitize skin.
I just recently read try aloe with glycolic acid cream...will try that next time I shave unless any other ideas.
Don't press too hard. Go with the grain.

Dont worry about using a hot towel. You're not at a barber shop, where you can't shower first. Soak your face at every opportunity in the shower, then shave immediately after. Why are you lathering your soap and letting it sit? The lather just breaks down. Shower, soak your face at every opportunity, dry your body (not your face), then lather your face right up and shave. If it takes you long to build a lather, try face lathering. You don't need a scuttle or bowl full of lather when you're only going to use a small amount of it, and it's a lot of work.

As Marshal suggests, cold/cool/room temperature water during shaving can help.
