Thread: Maiden Voyage: Henckels Friodur 13/16"; 72 1/2

I recently acquired a new old stock Henckels Friodur 13/16"; 72 1/2. It was still sealed in the plastic wrapper.

Today was her first shave. Wow, what an awesome shave. Even better, I took her out of the sealed wrapper, stropped her and she was ready to go. I think the scales are linen micarta. Has a lead wedge.

Though new, she does need a clean-up. I'll break out some Vulpex soap, Pre-Lim and Ren Wax and expect she'll look brand new.

Sweet looking Razor .

Very nice! Every one I've ever had was a sweet shaver. I'm guessing from the faintly visible longitudinal striping in the scales that they are what's commonly referred to as 'French Ivory' - a form of celluloid or plastic.

Yes, these Friodurs defy any notion that stainless steel razors can't deliver a close and comfortable shave.

I consider myself luck to have some.

I've been wondering what the scales are. I had guessed linen micarta, though have very little knowledge about vintage scales and what they are made from

I have a pair that look just like yours, and as stated earlier they can be made to shave wonderfully. They do take some patience on the hones to get the most out of them. YMMV
As far as the scales are concerned I don't believe they are linen micarta I think they are some kind of polymer.

I think another poster was correct that they are French Ivory Celluloid.

Mine was shave ready with a good stropping, though it was brand new and still in the sealed plastic bag.

Of course, the actual shave tells the story on a great shave, though this razor is like a lawn mower when passed across hair at half height.

Very nice. How old is the razor?

I don't know. The info I found says the were post WW2 - the 50s and 60s. This razor was new old stock. I got it on eBay and it came from Japan.
