It's too long ago for me to remember all the details, but could it be that until 40 you are adopted, or have some custodian watching over your face, and at your 40th birthday there is some kind of ceremony that officially celebrates your coming off age and accepting responsibility for your face??

It could explain all the "Help me choose (......)" posts, couldn't it?

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but I think he is referring to the age lines and wrinkles that life will contribute, depending on how you've chosen to live yours. That will be reflected in your face.

I agree with Jimmy. 40 was a ripe old age in Lincoln's time, and the time when your face truly showed your age and the harshness of your life. And 100 years before, you were darn lucky to live to 40. Consider that an abcess in your tooth roots could easily kill you, as could 1,000 other things at the time that modern medicine now easily cure. It's obvious looking at old photographs and Daguerreotypes how harsh life was back in the 1800s.

Thomas Jefferson was 27 when he started thinking about the articles of the Declaration, and he drafted them for final review when he was 33 (if my memory serves at my age) And back then, 33 was considered very well aged. Credits to Thomas Paine whom indeed inspired the writings of Jefferson - and Madison (The Constitution). Read "Common Sense" by Paine (if you have not already) and you'll understand what I mean.

As an American history buff, I often wish we had motion picture film, quality photography and audio recordings back then. Can you imagine seeing things as they happened? It would be amazing.
