    I don't think I could ever do an against grain pass on my upper lip.

    What i try to do is straight down pass, then re-lather and stretch the skin and go almost diagonally, or vertically. Each way meeting under my nose then coming in from the other side.

    Hope This helps, and remember Take your time there if it is the problem area.

    Are there any theories or practices out there for the newly initiated to try in attempt to minimize labial blood letting?

    It's pretty easy just hold your upper lip in place with your bottom teeth and hold the blade with two hands and shave against the grain remember lightly. Works like a charm.

    Of course now that I have said that I will probably sever my nose...
