Default Barber Shave in Tel Aviv

Earlier this week I was down in Tel Aviv, visiting with friends and hunting for razors in the antique stores. Before I left, I went to check out this barber downtown whom I was told still gives shaves. Indeed he does! His name is Rafael, and he hails from Bukhara, Uzbekistan. We had a nice chat as he worked, about barbering and razors and whatnot. I should mention that this was my first ever professional shave. What a treat! He did a great job, real full service. He trimmed my goatee, cleaned up the back of my neck, face/head/shoulder rub, the works. According to him there are hardly any barbers left in Israel who still offer razor shaves. I guess I'll be going back to him!

Antique store hunting went well, I'll post about that in the razors forum.

    Noam,

Sounds like a treat indeed. What was the cost? I unfortunately haven't been to Tel Aviv is a while, but where is he located?

It's refreshing to read about someone getting a good shave at a barber shop. Congratulations on having found a place for the full treatment!

The shave cost me 25 shekels, which comes out to about $5.83 or so. The shop is located on 3 Hashomer st. which is right next to Shuk Hacarmel, the big open market.

There's actually a video some dude posted od him getting a shave and a haircut at this place.

    Noam,

Todah. At $5.83 that's a hell of a deal, and I actually know that location.

    Take care.

That video is great. Long, but great. I think it's awesome that he went in looking shaggy and that barber zipped it all off like it was nothing.

nice job man.. Yeah that is a great price for the works that you got. I think last year when I got a str8 shave at the barber by my house that I got the razors from it was $10Cdn.

Just watched the video, a little long yes, but very interesting. Looks like a $60 service (US) for a tenth of the price. What products does he use? And, what is that cream the barber put on for the ATG pass?

I especially loved the powder application at the end with the facial massage - the service seemed to be textbook right from the Barber manual.

    Nice work.

He uses Israeli shaving cream, that's about all I recognized. Not sure what the cream for the ATG was, or what aftershave he used at the end. Talcum powder was involved toward the end.

The facial massage is indeed quite nice, as is the cold face towel at the end (he explained to me that he keeps a fridge in the shop so that he has acceptably cold water for this purpose). He even throws in some chiropractor work--at one point he grabs my head by the sides, lifts is a bit and shakes it vigorously and then twists it both ways until it pops. Then he tells me, "now it's sitting properly." I've never been able to crack my neck like that, it was pretty cool.

I'll have to go back there next time I'm in the country, it was such a pampering!

That was a long video, though I did skip the haircut and just went to the actual shave. Is he actually using a straight, or a Feather? I thought I was seeing/hearing him place a place in the razor.
