Thread: Different Feeling - Finisher

how would you describe the difference in shaving (feeling) between finished sharpening with an Naniwa 8.000 or a Naniwa 10.000 Super Stone or is there no different feeling at all in this case?

So much depends on the skill of the honer. There are some folks on this forum who could refine an 8k edge beyond what I could hope to achieve on a 10k.

I don't have a 10.000, but I have the 12.000. The difference is quite large, to me. The 8.000's edge feels much more forgiving, but has trouble cutting well through thicker hairs. A 12.000 edge can cut through anything really easily, but a light touch while shaving is imperative to avoid irritation. I imagine a 10.000 would be a split between the two.

Are you thinking of adding the 10.000 stone to your current stones or purchasing stones to start honing?

Most people use a 12k after an 8k. There's no hard rules saying you have to.

I agree. If you already have an 8k, I'd jump to a 12k stone, and you'll really feel a difference in the shave.

I didn't realize how harsh the Naniwas felt until i came across a green thuri and i couldn't believe how much smoother it felt after the 12k.

Again it’s been said. It’s the hands of the guy honing. I gave up on all the rest of the finishers cause my 12 Nani used right is getting edges as smooth and sharp as jnats or eschers. If you have an 8k and max it out you won’t find much difference to the 10 k. Go to the 12k and it will be a little sharper.

I already have the Super-Stones available but still practice honing.... I stopped after the 8k.... for shaving wondering if the 10k will bring any improvement.
Until now I used the 10k only for refreshing a "shave ready" razor. I don not have a 12k. I only have Naniwas and a Corticule (yellow)..

Are you using magnification?

If so, look at the bevel and the edge. Make sure you are getting all the previous stria removed in your progression, otherwise no stone will give you a better edge.

Then max out your 8k, so you have a uniform 8k stria pattern and a super straight, chip free edge. Freshly lapping the stone face to remove all the swarf for your finish laps and jointing the edge and re-setting with 10-20 laps will straighten the edge.

After maxing out the 8k try 10-15 laps on Chrome Oxide, you should have a very nice shaving edge. Then do the same for the 10k and see if it improves.

A lot will depend on the condition of the razor.

I don’t have the Naniwa 8k, but I have both the 10k and the 12k (modern white version). The only 8k that I really am OK with the edge from is the Shapton Glass High Carbon (HC, the grey one). There’s not a lot of difference in the edge feel between the 10k and 12k Naniwa. I do not believe that they are the same stone though for whatever reason, the 10k is softer and polishes well, much like folks describe the old 12k which was pink I believe.

I did a comparison (here I think) between the Naniwa 10k and the Suehiro 20k, and the difference in the edge feel was difficult to determine, the S20k edge did marginally better on some parts of my face, but overall the difference was not much. I think you’ll feel a difference going from N8k -> N10k, but that could be dependent on your beard hardness too.
