Thanked: 1081Fathers day shave
Today I gave my dad a straight razor shave for fathers day. I've brought him shaves at Truefitt & Hill, Trumpers and other London barbers before but as they use a shavette I thought the real deal would be nice.
I tip my hat to barbers, I found it a lot harder than I ever imagined. As I shave with a straight most days I thought shaving someone else wouldn't be too hard, how wrong I was! It was all going well with the hot towel prep, lathering and cheeks but when it came to the muzzle area I was stumped, it was like starting with a straight all over again. I just couldn't seem to get it right. Obviously my dad's got a good few years on me and his chops are not taught as my Hollywood face (to coin Obies phrase) so skin stretching was paramount but I just didn't feel comfortable. I called quits and finished with a DE but still wasn't overly happy with the finish.
Like everything I suppose, good practise makes perfect. The intention was there but I'd need a lot of practice to be proficient and happy with the results.

Thanked: 1081Cheers, Bob. I used one of my favourite razors, my W&B FBU. I only used it last week and it gave a great shave. Point in note, technique can make a shave ready razor perform inadequately.

Well done Mark.
Talking of older people and skin stretching, years ago when my Father in Law was about 98 he was in hospital for 2 weeks with pneumonia. I was still shaving with a Gillette cartridge and can of lazy-shave back then so I took my razor , a new blade and my goop in to him to give him a shave.
I remember that his skin was so loose that when I started stretching, the skin under his jaw almost disappeared into his hairline- - Steve
