Default Funny Shave Practice for Newbies

I remember from my childhood that on old barber said he used to train people to shave with a straight razor by "shaving" a balloon. I remember he said this teaches you to get the angle and closeness right. If you pop the balloon, you went too deep!

I just received my new razors and look forward to trying my first shave with it tomorrow morning. I plan to only shave my upper cheek over my growing beard at first, in order to practice technique.

Have any of you guys heard of the balloon test?

    Don

(yes, this is Sunday morning, and usually we are at our church at this time, but my wife and I are taking time at home this morning since the kids are at friends homes this weekend. When you've raised 4 kids for the last 21 years, you take every opportunity you can get!)

I believe the balloon practice was quite common until recent years, it perhaps is still performed.

It's still performed, but now I think they use regular disposables

My barber, Shelagh says that she needed to do it to pass her test. Never tried it myself, but I'm confident I could do it now.

You can only attempt this with a huge amount of lather on the balloon. This test will allow to learn your cleanup abilities if you fail the shave test.

I wouldn't use that even on a balloon.
