Thread: How long does it take?

i think everyone questioned this when they started. then about 45 min on 3 pass. now about 2 min stropping while shower warms up. then after shower about 10 min 2 pass start to finish, and another 3 min for cleanup and put up. like others i can get away with a 1 pass for less time, but don't prefer it.

Ok so that's probably the reason I have to re-lather so often, taking so long and it dries up. Looks like as I get better I'll be able to do it faster, not in a rush to get there though as it may come at the expense of part of my face if I do.

I have been using a straight for about two weeks now, still very new, I have a goatee, and like many of the others on here I let the brush soak while I am in the shower, I strop the night before, and I use the time the Alum block is doing it's thing to clean everything up. I can do a decent job at a three pass shave in 15 to 20 minutes, depending on my alertness factor. Again I have a goatee and a mustache so that takes care of the harder areas to shave I suppose. When I first started I didn't have a really good quality cream that made shaving uncomfortable and slower. I would suggest if you don't have one already to get an alum block for preshave use, and post shave use, and I would definitely suggest the awakenings shave soap from mama bears shop. www.bear-haven.com Those factors alone improved shave quality tremendously. Good Luck and keep going.

Thanked: 1215-30 minutes depending on how close I want to go.
The closer I go, the longer I have to spend on it

Thanked: 1I'm down to about 25 minutes for a 3 pass, I can go as fast as 15 minutes, but then my face will be red with razor burn, shave won't be as close. On the bright side, that's still not fast enough to draw blood

after 2+ years at it.. i guess it takes me 15minutes from the second i set infront of the mirror to : make lather, shave, lather again, shave 2nd pass, cold rinse and witch hazel afterwards, then wipe down the razor.
it becomes second nature and goes much smoother and quicker with time. but remember, its not a speed thing, its all about enjoying your hobbie and your personal time

Thanked: 0About 20 minutes for three passes: (1) WTG; (2) ATG; and (3) final no-lather (water-only) touch-up. I always strop between passes. I don't use hot towels. It takes approximately another minute or two for cleanup and stowage.
I've been straight-razor shaving for a year and a half, so I don't think I'm going to get any faster; but when I first started, it took about 45 minutes to an hour, gradually reducing to 20 minutes by the end of the first six months. Whenever I try to go any faster than 20 minues, I end up with irritation and/or nicks and a less-than-desirable result. I envy the guys who can do it in 15 minutes or less.

it takes as long as you're comfortable with. in the morning when i'm going to work, 25 mins at the most. on the week end or when i have lots of time, i'll take an hour if i have it! bottom line is it takes what it takes. especially when you are still learning how to shave your face.
