It depends on which razor I'm using (smaller razors need a different grip) as well as where I'm shaving. Small razors I have index finger on the spine and my middle finger on the tang; larger blades I use 2 fingers on the spine and ring finger on the tang. If I'm going ATG or on the neck I'll almost always use the '1 on the spine, one on the tang' grip, as it gives me a lighter touch. As long as you have a firm grip on the blade and good control over the blade angle, whatever works well for you is the right way to hold it.

Thanked: 155What ever works for you.
I hold mine between my thumb and the first two fingers of my hand, with the handle between my middle and ring finger.

This is exactly how I hold my razor when I am shaving downward on my face.
When I am shaving upwards, I hold the razor firmly between my thumb and top joint of my first finger with my thumb (or first finger- depending on which hand I'm using) on the stamp and my remaining fingers cradling the scales to adjust them to allow the blade edge to reach where I'm shaving.

But hey, what's proper for some is uncouth for others...

When I decided to take up SR shaving, I read the forum's "Beginner's Guide To Straight Shaving" and followed the instructions on holding the razor. That's the way I have been doing it for 7 months now with no change in grip or technique.
