Thanked: 735I used a DE last night
For the first time since July I had a shave with the ol' DE, a Merkur Futur loaded with a Feather.
Razor cut the whiskers just fine, the Feather really is a smooth cutting blade...
But the shave was SO BORING!!!!
Really, not much character or romance to the shave. It was a simple exchange, run razor over beard, remove whiskers. No savoring of a finely honed straight edge, experiencing whether you had the edge "just right" or not.
Having the blade at the end of a stick, and mounted perpendicular to it just felt wrong, you know? It felt like trying to play the piano while wearing gloves or something.
The shave only took 15 minutes instead of the usual 45 with a straight (I was pressed for time, is a reason I went for teh DE), that was about the only plus in the DE's column in my mind.
The evening previous I had a top 5 shave with a freshly honed LeGrelot 1/4 grind. I really had enjoyed the feel of that edge on my face, and the entire shave had been terrific.
Last night with the DE, it felt more like I was simply going through the motions. Well, the Valobra almond smelled real nice anyhow!

Every now and then I think about picking up my slant with a feather but I can't bring myself to waste the shave. It is reminiscent of my feeling when I am looking at the road bike or going out to the trail. The trail bike always wins.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Too funny, I picke dup a DE this morning for a few reasons, the two biggest are time and that I had a bit of irritation from my first full week of straight shaving.
I got a fine shave. Not fantastic, but pretty good, out of a frst-run derby and a Merkur classic.
I felt like I cheated. it was nice, I guess, not having to "worry" about the blade. But what about spending the time round my hard to get spots to really get those whiskers? Feeling the edge...is it as smooth as yesterday? Smoother? Well enough stropped? It was fast, but somehow felt cheap.
Odd, just a few months ago, DE shaving was cutting edge to me, wetshaving was the end unto itself. Now....if it's not a straight...it's just a shave.Last edited by smokelaw1; 11-21-2008 at 06:22 PM.
