When I did use a hot towel I get it wet under the faucet. Squeeze out the excess water and put it in a micro wave dish. I find that in my particular micro wave 45 seconds gets it as hot as I can stand it. This will vary from microwave to microwave so be careful if you try it.

I crank back in a lazy boy recliner and sit there until the towel is cooled off. Yes it is a hassle and that is why I rarely do it anymore. I usually shave after I shower. Whether it is after the shower or not I wash my face vigorously twice with hot tap water first. This is enough for me to get a comfortable shave.

BTW, when I do the hot towel I use bar towels. They are thinner then an normal face towel and that will make a difference in the heating time and the general feel. When I shave later today I will go ahead and do the hot towel again just to see if it makes a significant difference.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
