Thanked: 3How good?
Been shaving with a straight for about a month now.
While I seem to be getting better at it I still can't get as close a shave as I can with the two and three blade disposable razors.
Is this normal or do I need to improve my shave skills?

Its either a skill or a razor issue. We need to know whats going on while you are shaving, pulling, tugging, how does it feel etc.

Thanked: 3No pulling or tugging.
Really it feels pretty smooth.
Using a Dovo and a Boker that both pass the hht.

Sounds like a skill issue, maybe razor prep or beard prep. Talk us thru the routine.Step by step.

Thanked: 3Ok here goes
1-hot shower
2-strop razor 20-25 times
3-mix lather with col. conks soap
4-brush lather on
5-shave with the grain
6-relather and shave across the grain
BTW-I did notice that I get a closer shave after 2- 3 days between shaves instead of every day.
Does beard length make a differance?

Thanked: 1212Willy,
I have put together a wiki article with some advanced techniques.
Maybe there's something in it for you.
Advanced shaving techniques for the straight razor - Straight Razor Place Wiki
Best regards,

You may have just hit the nail on the head. Maybe. I like shaving every few days, I have tougher than average beard and when its short, it does not cut as well as it does with a little growth. Lets wait and see what some of the others have to say.
