When you nick yourself...
I'm reading several posts about guys using alum blocks to successfully seal up nicks and stop the bleeding. But, then there's "nick sticks" and styptic pencils. What would you guys recommend to deal with cuts and nicks? Does it depend on the size of the cut?

Same...
one is a stick, like a small pencil. You can touch up small places etc.
Bar is like a small bar of soap. Wet it down and rub on your face once over and it helps stop bleeding and has antiseptic properties.
Ohhhh... and some use aluminum powder... and some use none
Its a personal choice. I personally like the bar.

Using a styptic pencil I find that with a bigger nick, I tend to scar up a little more and they take longer to fade.
So, I don't use anything.

I use either styptic powder or pen. I prefer the powder.
This thread jinxed me. I got a nick today from my first spike point. It's gonna take some getting used to, I guess.

There should not be much difference among them. The term alum usually refers to a class of aluminum sulfate compounds. Both blocks and pencils are made with one of such compounds. I have a styptic pencil that works really well on cuts and razor burn. Alum blocks are larger so you cover a larger area in one pass but also cost more.

+1 I have a styptic pencil but if I use it, it tends to make a large scab and takes days to heal. The scab gets in the way of the next day's shave. I use a hot towel after shaving, then a cold water rinse, dry the face and splash on plenty of alcohol-based AS. Works great for me.
Of course, everyone is different. A styptic pencil may work for you or it may not. They're cheap, give 'em a try.
