Default Anyone use a Taylors Eye Witness?

    Hi everyone.
I have learned that there is quite a following for Bengall razors, but one of my recent purchases is a Taylor's Eye Witness. It has some rust / discolouration, but for only $20aud it's no great loss if it is salvageable.
I would like to hear from anyone who uses one of these. Are they as popular as the Bengall?
What are your thoughts about Taylor's Eye Witness?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

There has been a thread in the last couple of days on Taylor's Eye. You should do a search.

I have one and it is a top quality Sheffield Steel razor. The rust will come off I am sure.

Start gentle with a metal polish. Peek is one you can get in England for example. Autosol chrome cleaner is pretty good as well. If it is pitted, you will need to use wet and dry sandpaper and work your way up to 2000 grit and then hand polish with chromium oxide or a very abrasive paste.

The razor holds a very smooth and sharp edge and should be a delight to shave with.

Good luck and enjoy a quality piece of history. They do not make that quality today and very few reached that quality in the past. IMHO.

    Hope that helps.

The good news is that they are , as English said, a well respected brand. The bad news is that if that rust has badly pitted the edge it may cause the edge to fall apart as you hone it. If OTOH, it is merely surface rust it is not a problem.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I absolutely love mine. Picked one up in a lot worse shape than yours looks, and I did this to it. I think it turned out quite nicely.

It took a very very nice edge and is now among my best shavers. If you can get yours up and running you will not be disappointed in it, I guarantee it!

I have one in my rotation and think it is a fine shaver. If you can celan it up, you should really enjoy it. If you have not restored an edge before and are new at honing, you may find it VERY difficult to get the edge shave ready.

I still have several razors I picked up on ebay that I have not had the energy to finish restoring yet. I polished the tarnish and surface rust off to where they look nice, but just have not got all of them shave ready yet. Two down and four to go. One has a smallchip on the edge so it will take a lot of work, but it is in the cue.

Don't give up on it. A really old razor may take several hundred strokes on thehone to get ready. More if you have lousy technique like I did when I started trying to learn to hone.
