Thread: Whaaat?

I remember watching the method shaving vids a few years ago and was stunned at how the focus was on shaving with lots of lather and lots of passes rather than conserving resources and improving technique. Didn't seem right to me then and doesn't now either. The quotes you provide prove just how out of touch this 'method' is.

Selling your own product and creating a shaving method around that product, hmm where have I heard that before? Maybe Gillette with their shave systems?

Kristofer, you're welcome! To clarify, mantic59 is the man, and I mean no disrespect to him. On the method shaving discussion board, he has mentioned that he is not a "Method" shaver, so he jumped up another notch in my book, if that was possible. For impartial, simple, direct, and unbiased information on wetshaving, mantic59 is one of the best. He did a pretty good video series explaining Method shaving, which is what piqued my interest.

To clarify again, none of the above quotations are from mantic59, who goes by the handle "mantic" on hydrolast.com (which is pretty easy to figure out because there is plenty of discussion about his vids). Rather, all of the quotes are from Dr. Charles Roberts. And great for a laugh

I just feel that shaving, especially straight shaving, is something so personal because of so many variables, that there is really no way to make a "system" that can work better for everyone. Despite what Gillette says

It amazes me how someone can over-complicate what is, in essence, the simple act of cutting hair with a very sharp blade. The main appeal to me of the straight razor or even the DE, is it's basic simplicty.

Worldover, you bring up something that I have noticed...Why aren't mantic's videos more widely discussed here at SRP? His lathering tutorials are excellent learning tools, even if his DE stuff isn't exactly applicable.

Agreed. Even the DE videos do cover principles relevant to straight shaving, plus the whole attitude of shaving in a way you enjoy.

I dread to think how I'd have started with my straight if I hadn't watched mantic's videos first and used a DE for a few - very successful - shaves.

Good question JimR. I have no idea why they aren't more widely discussed, because the vast majority of them have direct application to what we do here (lathering, shave brushes, concepts, etc), and the ones that dont, are still pretty fun to watch. A buddy of mine introduced me to mantic59's vids, and i was so thoroughly hooked, that I couldn't stop watching them. Even though I eventually went the straight razor route, almost everything I know about wetshaving I learned from him.
