    Default Skin care

An observation. Since taking to this new shaving habit at around the turn of the new year, I've noticed (particularly in the last two to three weeks) that my skin has taken on a new 'softness', even behind the stubble. I know that there is some exfoliation in the shaving process - is the new-skin feel a result of that effect? I suppose that the attention to skin care in the form of application of post-shave moisturisers and general pampering will have helped (but I have to confess to having viewed most of the skin-care ads on the TV as being a little far-fetched). Could these ladies know something that we don't

I've taken to running as well, primarily to shift a load of excess blubber - that's working well. Unfortunately, the last to disappear will be the 'twelve-pack' but I am quite bemused by the slim-line facial features. I swear that my colleagues at work think I have stumbled upon some rejuvenation elixir

    More power to your blades!

Yes, the exfoliation will over time smooth out your skin, and the regular removal of old/dead skin cells will also have a beneficial effect. The use of a brush to apply lather stimulates the oil glands in your skin, resulting in a softer overall feel. Post shave moisterizers, like all skin creams, are nothing more than a water/oil emulsion, usually with some fragrence and color added. They do work in that they provide both water and an oil film to trap the water against your skin, but I question if they add anything to to beneficial effects of wet shaving (which also provides water and increased skin oil production).

I think that everything you are doing is helpful to clear your skin. The question is how much each of them is doing on its own. If you transitioned from an electric shaver to a straight, the difference in exfoliation would be more drastic than from other forms of wet shaving: cartridges or a double edge. I noticed that I also put now more emphasis on bear preparation than I did before so the results are obviously better now. Now that I use my won soap, I have absolute control on what is in it and I can make formulas that are specifically designed to suit my skin. I am not big into the post shave products because my skin, which is very temperamental, does not tolerate certain things. if yours is not, these treatments are designed to help your skin. Running also helps detoxing your skin and stimulate the sebaceous glands. The one thing to remember is that there are substantial differences in skin among people so what is good for you would not necessarily be good for others. If what you are doing is leading to improvements in your skin complexion, there is no reason to stop.

Thanks both. On reflection, the whole shaving thing is a smaller part of much greater attention to overall well-being, having decided to do something radical about increasing girth (and blood pressure). It's all working and the straight shaving routine is a terrific opportunity to reinforce that 'feel-good' factor, each day.

My face is definitely softer since I started using a brush and good soap to make lather. Usually 24 hours after shaving the stubble is well and truly reappearing, but it STILL feels nice and soft overall, better than my old ways felt just a few hours after shaving.

A slight downside though - my face skin is pinker than before as it's exfoliated and healthier, but my forehead looks yellow by comparison!! I'll have to start scrubbing it to make it match.

P.S. The facial contortions help tone up the face too.
