I have the same problem most days. I find that going at it from every angle possible will get it pretty close, but I have not fine tuned any particular technique in that area. Going sideways is what seems to get it the best for me. That and taking a bunch of really short strokes get it done, but I know there is probably a better way.
Speaking of under the chin, I'm not sure why yet, but there are patches of hair in the same area that seem to disappear and are shaved closer than the hair around them. I get the closest shave I have ever achieved in that area, but it shows up in the form of spots surrounded by hair. Kind of like leopard spots. And I get that with a WTG pass.

It's a tough spot to be sure. I don't shave ATG, which makes
it even tougher for me! I happen to have a mustache and
goatee at the moment, so I don't have to worry... for now...

While I can come close with a two pass shave the only way to get BBS on my chin is to go against the grain.
My recommendation is to go a couple days without shaving (this is a great weekend project) and see which direction the hair is growing in the spots you are having trouble with. Then with a dry face (and without actually shaving) see what grip on the razor works best for the angle you need. I think on my chin I use about four different grips and angles.

Thanked: 1903Three things:

- Experience (comes basically for free with 1.)
- This Wiki article: Advanced shaving techniques for the straight razor - Straight Razor Place Wiki
The flat cutting angle for the ATG pass, combined with some suicidal scything motions, works well for me.

I've found that I need to attack my beard from every angle to get BBS , which causes spots of razor burn on my face . So I don't bother trying for BBS . I usually just do a WTG , and a XTG on everything above my jawline . I do a WTG , and a ATG , below my jawline . This will give me a shave that's close to BBS , without the razor burn .
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .

Thanked: 155Start on one side of the chin going to the other side. As the stroke progresses, curve the razor so that you are going down and under the chin. Repeat from the other side. Stretch the skin from just behind the razor, and keep it tight.

Thanked: 278It's still a slight problem spot for me, but doing an ATG touch up with just water instead of lather can work wonders.

+1 i do this between my straight down and straight up strokes. a light touch seems to be the key to not getting razor burn. be careful though and make sure th lather is wet and slick as i have found it is easy to nick this area. sometimes i even set the blade flat on my face and tip it up before starting the stroke instead of starting right into it. this seems to let me get the angle right.
