Thanked: 271My New (Old) Barber Chair
About a year ago, I decided to give traditional straight razor shaves with the idea of possibly opening a fully-traditional old-style barbershop. This led to research into autoclaves and steel-scaled straight razors. I started giving shaves in January and, after I did three, I discovered that a barber's chair is an essential component. The chair I was using was too low (hurt my back) and too springy (I cut my wife's son and he said it was because the chair moved). So, I went out looking for a barber's chair. A new model (ugly) could be had for €2,000 and an old-style chair (1890s) that I really liked was €4,000 and I couldn't afford it. Then, I started looking at eBay and found a 1960s-style chair about a 2-hour drive away. So, yesterday, my wife and I drove up to Scanzorosciate, near Bergamo, to pick up this barber chair that I won on eBay for ONE EURO!!
Tomorrow morning I have an appointment with my dentist, who started it all when he told me that he would like me to give him a shave when he got married. At the time, I told him that it wasn't that simple but he got me thinking about it and I decided to learn how to do it. So, he will be the next victim.

Wow that's great. I love retro, everyone tells me I was born in the wrong era. Hell its one of the reasons I started shaving with a DE and recently progressed to a straight. Great job and I wish you continued success in keeping this art alive.

One Euro?! By Jove... that's really a very good deal! Saying "congratulations" isn't even good enough! This is a sign from the crazy gods above telling you that you are destined to be... a barber!
Well if I ever go to Modena I'll look you up for sure! As long as you don't re-enact that famous scene from "Milano calibro 9"... "Dove il soldi?" shouts Rocco Musco to the man in the barber chair as he slices through his face...
But yes... a real barber chair is a must have if you are shaving someone else. I shaved my brother once (in Milano, by the way... but he didn't owe me any money so...) and the lack of a good chair was a major point adding to the discomfort of the experience. He didn't get nicked though...
Nice chair!

Very cool. The idea of shaving someone else's face never occurred to me. As a professional tattooer I've shaved many an arm, leg, back and chest with a Weck replaceable blade straight for years. Now I mostly use a disposable bic. If I was to get a dentist in the chair there would have to be some payback for all of the pain they have inflicted.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

+1 Good one Jimmy!
Great catch Chimensch and even better price!
I've been wanting to get a Barber's chair for some time now. The problem is that I really don't have anyplace to put it. CarrieM give me a shave from time to time and it would be more enjoyable if I had the proper chair as you have found.
Maybe some day.
Best of luck in your shaving of others. Give the dentist one for me and one for Jimmy!“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)
