+1! Pictures fuzzy but illustrate the idea perfectly. That's exactly what I was trying to convey.

I believe your interpretation of the scythe motion is the one I have too. Thanks for wording it out (english not being my native tongue it is sometimes difficult to express opinion). Anyway what you describe is a motion of the razor I use sometimes while shaving. Mostly while doing the ATG pass, and it works good for me. Got a nick or two doing that, but not lately.
Again thanks for putting the interpretation in words.

I use that scooping or scrubbing stroke right under my jaw bone. My grain is crazy there.

To me the scything motion is more like the stroke of a windsheild wiper. Somewhat of an arc.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am at the tattoo shop every weekend and have had a busy couple of days. That is a good thing. Two more hours to go and I am on my own time. I think I get the idea and I can see what you mean calling it the scooping stroke as opposed to the scything stroke. I always pictured a guy swinging a scythe as going down and then arcing up kind of like a boxer throwing a semi uppercut hooking to the body. I stands corrected.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
