Default Electric razor chewed and raked my face.

Serves me right. I stowed my Norelco multi-mega-supersonic whirl (I think that was the actual model name IIRC) electric razor in a drawer almost two years ago after shaving daily with a straight all that time.

I was running very late last week and needed to get rid of obvious stubble within a few minutes. I grabbed that electric and it had enough juice in it to barely grind down the whiskers before it died wanting a recharge. Days later I still feel as though I took coarse grit sandpaper to my jawline. I even used skin stretching a la straight shaving to minimize skin chewing.

I like my straight razors better.

Electric razors are what started this obsession with shaving for me!!

I used a mach 3 for years, but decided about a year ago that I wanted an electric razor. Well I got one, one of the more expensive models too. It KILLED my face. I've always had a sensitive face, and this was clearly not the way to go. I tried it several more times in the hopes that I would get used to it, no such luck....

I returned it, but because I no longer had the box I had to take store credit as opposed to a refund. They had a Merkur DE razor and a shaving brush, so I bought those using the store credit that I had. I started to enjoy my shaves more and more, and a couple of months into using a DE I decided to try a straight. And here I am today!

I have a couple of electrics in my shaving tool collection. In the past I have used electric exclusively. My experience with electrics is that like all other shaving methods preparation is required to avoid irritation. Unfortunately, electrics are sold as a quick shaving tool which leads to most problems. However since I am a straight shaver the electrics rarely get taken out.

I don't miss the unavoidable itching I had after shaving with an electric razor. I shaved with one for the last 10 or so years before getting into straights. I always had to shave then jump into a hot shower immediately to sooth my neck. Good times... Jeremy-

I'm not one to defend electrics, but slightly in their defense, I will say that I have found that they do not cut as well when they are dragging down due to a low battery. I suspect that the multi mega supersonic whirl might have done a slightly better job if it had been running at full speed with a fully charged battery.

Same thing happened to me. I used an electric during my time in the military because I had zero time in the mornings to shave. After I got out I figured out that you could actually enjoy a shave, picked up a straight, and haven't looked back.

It's interesting to read how different people's faces respond to different shaving methods. I've never had a great electric shave, my face always being left with that short stubble that makes your face feel like sandpaper. But the worst side-effect I've had has been a general irritation that takes a couple of hours to settle down. I would never have believed that an electric razor could cause cuts, razor bumps, pustules etc etc, but I see posts in the forums about this quite a lot.

Victor Kiam sure had a brass set when he said "Shaves as close as a blade or your money back."
