Thanked: 0straight razor to Full beard
Is it necessary to whack down a full beard with scissors or a trimmer before taking a straight razor to it?

Thanked: 235I would say no you shouldn't have to clipper the beard first, but a full beard could make it difficult for the lather to get deep into the whiskers. If you make sure your lather is very well applied and your razor is very sharp I don't think you will have a problem.

Thanked: 0Nope there really is no need to trim it down pre-shave. I just took off my full beard with my straight a couple of weeks ago (Damn, I knew I should have recorded it ) It will take it clean off with each pass as long as, yes per above, your straight is nice and sharp and you do good prep work and have the beard well, well saturated with lather.

Probably, taken that the lather is well applied and the razor is sharp, you will have no problems. However, I would say - and I had a beard before the straight razor arrived over a year ago - that trimming it down would be a better choice and perhaps garantee a closer, more confortable shave...
But sure, go for it!

By the way, I recommend not rinsing the blade off
in the sink after shaving some heavy growth, lest
it become severely clogged

I say go for it. I cut down a 2 month growth of beard with my trusty Boker and it was awesome. Enjoy it, it will be over too soon! Agree with all above though, proper prep is important, like the hot towel and the full lather. I like to lather once, then hot towel, then lather it up again and it makes for very smooth sailing.
