Red face Took off the goatee and have the gashes to prove it

Turns out uncovering new territory means new "learning opportunities".

I've shaved my chin twice now and have gotten a new and creative nick each time.

I also have no effing clue (so far - I'll keep at it, obviously) how to smoothly shear the stubble just under the chin. I may need to go back to the shaving videos...

All that said, I'm not down about it. It's this sort of challenge that keeps life interesting, no?

Did anyone else go through a similar rough patch when they decided to expand their shaving to new areas of the face?

it just takes practice. For me.. i need to do one stroke from just above the chin and down. I dont try to start at that area

YES! I shaved my goatee just over a week ago. The day I shaved it I gave myself a nice shallow slice on the upper lip about 1/4" long. It healed up fast though. i didn't shave again till this morning, was letting hair fill in to start reshaping my sideburns.

this morning no cuts, but took me a bit to get it all smooth. I have the same problem start, just where my chin rolls from the front to the bottom, the edge. I don't know if I can explain this but instead of shaving it going down, I did a sideways swipe, angled from below. it worked, though I had to make smaller passes. had to go back over the under chin area too.

I am using my most tame razor though, the 5/8 torrey spike. not comfortable enough yet to try my bigger blades around that area. I would have gone in with my w&b this morning but needed the spike point to make a really crisp line on my new sideburn shape.

It is good, having to up our game a bit

The area right under my chin has a grain which goes from my left to right. So the only way to really get it out of there is to do an under-the-chin right-to-left sweep, which is extremely difficult.

I do 2 XTG swipes in that area and call it a day, at least until I try to master the ATG in that spot. So, to answer your question, yes this is also my trouble spot.

Just shaved my chin for the first time in about 25 years about a month ago.
I got a small cleft in my chin , and with that and the curve between my bottom lip and chin it takes a bit more adjusting skills to keep the blade from digging in on a ATG pass with a straight.

Sounds like my experiences. I started straight shaving with a goatee which made the learning curve much shallower but when I decided to remove it a month later things got complicated. I always end up with some blood showing when I work around my mouth/chin. Not like bleeding or gashes though usually just the one where you take off too close to the skin and have like a wet red spot. Can't even see it once I've done the post shave routine and it never really hurts though so no biggie.

Default I shaved my Goatee yesterday

So I have been shaving with a straight razor for well over a year now, but yesterday was the first time shaving my chin area.

It was much more difficult than I expected. I'm used to getting extremely smooth shaves, but I failed to do so on my chin. I also got a nice cut on my chin. The first cut I've had in a very long time.

Oh well, I cannot wait to give it another go tonight.
