Sounds like a good shave! Big steel has different geometry, I've found, and the same techniques you end up doing by rote just don't apply in these instances.

I think the same goes when switching from a full hollow to a wedge - the basic premise stays the same, but I don't know if it's psychological or not, but I think some of the angles and techniques have to be slightly altered.

    Any pictures of the beast?

Isn't it fun? I love shaving with the big ones, my two favorites being a 8/8 and a 9/8. Looking for a 10/8 now...

Welcome to the "big iron" club....wait a minute...is there a big iron club yet?

It's a bit odd using a wedge for the first time. It's pretty quiet. I fly around with a 7/8 hollow, but my new 8/8 wedge is requiring a little different method.
If there's no Big Iron Club, sounds like it must be time to found one! Does an 8/8 get you in, or is that just not there?

As MM said its just a different geometry, keep it up you will adapt, the big blades are a joy alll their own.

Big blades do attract a premium, so it sounds like you should be pleased, if you're happy with what you paid. Ah, I'd assumed from the lack of sound, & the fact that it's a big W&B that it would be. 1/4's are still a stiff grind though.

cutalot, unfortunately big blades will never shave well, are inconvenient, and a pain to hone as you're seeing. you should sell it to me for whatever you have into it and consider yourself lucky. or better off trade to me for a 5/8 and be happy.
