Japanese barber shave
Came across this video on one of the German fora, and though it'd be appreciated here too. It's a 40 minute (!) video of an American's visit to a traditional Japanese barber, filmed by his Japanese better half, interspersed with views of the shop. It confirms my ideas about Dutch barbers being ridiculously expensive for their efficiency and service level.
Forty minutes is rather long for a vid, but well worth watching. If you want to skip:
- price list (@ app. 20 minutes)
- shave with a J-straight (24')
- ear cleaning (29')
- hair washing (upright soaping, rinsing head to the front)(30')
- facial treatment (hot towel and cream massage) (33')

I'm totally new to SR's and im eagerly awaiting my first SR shave(looking for a SR in the classifieds here for purchase) what stood out to me was the time the barber spent on the chin and around the mouth vrs the sideburn and cheek area good thing to think of when my journey comes.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video.
What I am puzzled about is why the barber shaved his forhead!?

Thats one impressive shave .I love the skills that the barber is demonstrating.
One question though that razor looked like a japanese version of a shavette . Does anyone know of a supplier for those . Cheers Paul

Masks are commonly worn in Japan when people have a cold, or are around lots of people and don't want to catch a cold.
The barber shaved his forehead because a full facial shave is the norm in Japan--for women, as well. Very dark hair against not so dark skin stands out, and so people tend to shave all the hair they can. Foreheads, eyelids, etc. Just one of those little cultural differences.
The replaceable blade Japanese straight was a Feather-type razor, Kai also makes them, and Schick used to.
You can get a Feather Artist club at Classic shaving, I think...

This is what made me want to get into straight razor shaving. While in Japan, I got a haircut & shave at a local barber shop.
The shave was so close and so comfortable that since then I've always to make the switch.
It was only recently that I came across an online ad for straight razors that the fire was refueled.
