I always lather against the grain, at a 15 degree angle. Then I let the brush "rest" for 24 hours before aligning the bristle striations with a barber hone. I use only the weight of the whisker when I lather up and I always wash the brush in a disciplined x stroke. I find though that the center of the brush always gets the most cleaning action.
I think the best way to lather is to use two brushes, one very coarse and the other very soft. I usually use a ratio of strokes like this 1/5, 1/5, 1/10, etc. I then stack all my brushes in a little pyramid and go to bed.
