How many passes?
I have a stropping question, I feel I may not be stropping enough? I do about 20 passes but find around the end of my shave the razor could use a few more. I read so many different oppinions some do 20 on canvas then same on leather, some do 100 each! What is the general concensous on the average number of passes and does everyone use both canvas and leather? Just curious thanks!

I thought 50 on leather was the norm. I dont bother at all with the canvas on a hanging strop and prefer my paddle, of which I always do 50 full passes, 100 strokes in total.

25 canvas,50 leather before shaving
10 canvas,20 leather after.
That's just me,everyone's different, but I think this will be something like what lots of folks do.

How Many Passes?
Gentlemen,
My strop passes come in two modes:
Mode 1:
1. 25 passes on canvas, 60 passes on leather before the shave.
2. 15 passes on canvas, 30 passes on leather after the shave.
Mode 2:
1. 15 passes on canvas and 60 passes on leather before the shave.
2. 15 passes on canvas and 30 passes on leather after the shave.
Why the two different modes? I haven't the slightest idea.
Regards,
Obie

Depends on the razor. Some have harder steel than others and benefit from a few more passes. Most get 50 on leather and then I shave. The harder steel, like my Chandler, Williams, anything stainless gets 80-100 passes. When it starts to tug, I give them 10 on a chrome ox pasted strop, then back to the leather.

My routine is 50 linen (or webbed fabric) and 50 leather pre shave and 20 to 30 leather post shave.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Pre shave 20 canvas, then 50 leather. Post shave 15 leather. I'm still a little new so what do I know, although comparing it too others it's not off base.
