Who gave you your worst shave? What was it with (ie mach3, elec, str8) What was bad about it?
About a year or two ago I bought an electric Norelco with the 3 circular foil things. OUCH! That thing yanked my whiskers and I quickly junked it (and maybe I cursed it too).

My worst shave was also with an electric. It was an old hand-me-down from my Dad. I was all of 15 years old and it was the most painful experience of my life up to then.
My second worst shave was about three weeks after the bad electric shave. It was my first DE shave. I used an old can of Colgate shave cream. Did I say old? It was so old that it was mostly liquid. And I even managed to take a few chunks out of my face too.
It has been great since then.

A single blade Bick disposable. It was so uncomfortable and nicked me terribly, very sore afterward. Wished I had some aftershave that day. I realised not only that the razor was useless, but that other nine left in the package were garbage too.

See my barber thread.
Second place goes to those blue disposable single blade bic's that my father used to use. Those things were midevil!! And that was like late grade school, early high school. My beard was no where near as thick as it is today. Dad, how did you ever manage with those!
Oh, and my dad things I'm nuts for changing to a DE (some nonsense about progress and technology...psshaww!). He has no idea that my str8 is on the way. He's going to think I'm plain crazy!

The first worst shave was with a Panasonic Wet/Dry electric razor. I lathered up in the shower and took that p.o.s. to my face and neck. I had such razor burn that I couldn't wear a shirt! The burn lasted for about 3 to 4 days. I threw the thing out.
The second worst shave was with one of those disposable bic razors. You know, the white handled single blade razors with the cheese yellow protector. Not only did I get a serious burn, but I cut the $hit out of my face. It came in a package of ten, but I only used one. The rest are probably in the same land-fill as the Panasonic.
Since that day, I swore I would never use disposable again. I the became a Gillette sucker and fell into the never ending process of buying more blades at an ever increasing price.
Now, if I choose not to, I won't ever have to purchase another blade in my lifetime.
Filarmonica 7/8 -- I could shave as well with one of my pocket knives as the shave it initially gave! I am very disappointed with the results. I only have 2 razors right now, and the other one -- Timor Blue Steel 5/8 -- kicks the snot out of that Filarmonica.
I've honed it myself, and it has improved from the initial shaves, but it appears that it has got to go to a honemeister. It better have some serious improvement after that, or it will be put up for sale.
Boot camp 1960. Navy issue razor and Barbasol shaving cream in a tube. No instructions and to top it off they had the audacity to tell you you had an improper shave.

Worst shave ever...I just put a thread about it. Friday I shaved with a Mach 3 because my straight was gone, and I got horrible razor burn. I even used a shave brush and soap and all the warm steam and everything. Horrible shave. It felt nice for about an hour, then the razor burn really set in. Can't wait to get the straight back.

I'm wondering why people expect an electric razor to adjust to the face immediately. Of course the first few shaves are going to be uncomfortable. An electric razor is new to your face. It is a FACT that your skin will require three weeks to adjust to the electric razor.Quote:

I have two worsts ever:
The absolute worst shave ever was my own fault. I had been shaving with a DE for about 2 weeks, and it was an extremely mild Gillette at that. I really liked it and the whole wetshaving thing in general, and I wanted to try a straight. Instead of buying all the equipment and possibly not liking it, I decided to go with a Feather instead. That way if it wasn't for me, all I would have is one razor to get rid of.
Well, I fought the Feather and I lost. For some completely stupid reason:confused: -- and after a fairly bloody first pass -- I decided that I should do another pass...against the grain . It felt like Hannibal Lecter himself had skinned my face after that shave. It was bloody, horrible, bloody, and oh so painful. I took a whole week off from shaving just to let my face recover. I've since tried the Feather and had a little more success, but I've finally made the decision to go ahead and try a true straight. I'm looking forward to a much more enjoyable first experience.
My other worst shave, which wasn't my own fault, was with some electric. I think it was a Norelco...the one that oozed goo out of the top which was supposed to lube your skin. It didn't do anything for me other than chew up the under side of my chin and leave me with terrible razor burn. I've never even considered another electric after that experience.

My old Trac II. It used to butcher my neck, although part of it was probably due to poor prep in my case. I ended up going to a Braun electric. It was just easier to shave with although nothing close to a DE or a straight.
Mach 3 for sure in my case. Never had problems with electrics (other than their ineffectiveness), but every m3 shave gives me a 2-day razor burn.
Actually, that was your own fault. You're yet again another man who tried an electric once and never stuck with it. I'll say it again: you can't use an electric once and expect a close, comfortable shave. You need time for your face to adjust to it, which can take three weeks.Quote:

Wow, I'd forgotten about the single-blade plastic disposables. Murder.
Worst in memory: my trusty DOVO straight. A case of user error. I had had it in very nice shape, then tried for a touch-up at the Norton 4k/8k. Possibly I produced a wire edge, or else I kept changing the angle of the honing laps and wound up with with the striations all higgledy-piggledy. Good God. Every inch of skin that I shaved was raw: it looked scratched,, like mild abrasions, even a bit swollen. It was on the third day that the redness passed.
Since then, I've honed at a strict 45-degree angle. In fact, somebody here wrote about using a piece of paper with lines on it as a guide: I've done that ever since and managed to produce smooth edges.
Hands down my worst shaves ever were with my electric (and it was a nice braun too). I used that razor for years, so it wasn't a matter of "giving it time". It sucked on the first day and it sucked on the last day and it sucked every day in between. Why did I keep using it? Because I didn't know any better and I thought shaving was *supposed* to suck. I mean it always sucked when I used mach 3, ultras, atras, disposables, etc why should it be any different? I used to use disposables on the weekend or when I had time just to give my face a break from the torture of using the braun when I was in a hurry... and I even "wetshaved" using a brush and soap with my disposables and I considered using the cheap disposables as a "luxury" shave compared to what I was used to normally.
Obviously shaving was *supposed* to suck and was my penance for being lucky enough to have a penis.
The day I shaved with my feather for the first time without nicking myself was also the day I put the braun in the trash can. All my disposables followed the braun into the trash and I had to resist the urge to pee on them when I threw everything away.

I never found electrics to be too uncomfortable.. Just inferior performers.. I've used both systems (Braun and Philips) without any issues other than quality.

I finally got truely sick of it and threw my Braun against a brick wall (literally) in a fit of rage. That was when I found SRP and I've not looked back since. Yes it takes a bit of time for your face to adjust to a new shaving system, but I think the 20 years I spent with an electric was about 19.99 years too long.

Bic (or really most of the disposables)Mach III. Haven't used an electric yet that shaves as close as a bic. Made hamburger meat out of my face with an old Gllette double edge that was my grandfathers until I learned how to use. But it did shave close.
When I was 19 I shaving with a Braun electric and the foil broke as I was going across my chin.... It sounded like running over something with a lawn mower. Ground up my chin pretty good...
Grandfathers DE when I was teenager. You can guess the rest:D
As a student with a DE. Made every possible mistake. Used cold water. Instantly after lathering I began to shave with hasty strokes. Looked pretty awfull afterwards ... :o
Same experience but I took the thing back and got my money back. I had tried several electrics up to this point and this was final straw. I still have a cheap electric that I use the trimmer to trim up the mustache but it goes no closer to the rest of the face.Quote:

I had about the same experience with the same two "razors", although the electric was some fancy norelco. Now I just take two straghts with me wherever I go...this requires me to check my luggage every time I fly (which is very often) and its worth it. Even this week, the flight to boston is around 1 hour and it takes 30 minutes to get my checked baggage, but everytime I get to shave makes it worth the pain of dealing with checking baggage.Quote:

The SECOND worse shave I ever had was when I was in high school in the '60's. It was with my dad's old electric razor that he only used when he ran out of DE blades. Don't know the brand, but it was big, square and LOUD. Terrible razor burn. THE WORST shave I ever had was in 1976 while on tour w/ the National Shakespeare Co.; I was wearing a full beard and decided that the neck hair was just too nasty looking. I hadn't even brought a razor with me on the road, but I did have a new Swiss Army knife! I used the little blade as it was very sharp; but not sharp enough! Got about half way through it and gave up. Later found a Gillette Tech 3 piece razor at a little drug store in the town & happily used it for several years before losing the top piece down a sink w/ out a drain guard. I still carry that Swiss Army knife on a daily basis, BTW.
my WORST shave ever was a couple weeks ago when I tried to use a straight razor for the first time. How one can remove about 14 layers of your skin off your cheek and chin without plucking a single hair ceases to amaze me.
...things are going much better now. Now parts of my face are getting the best shave ever and others are just passable.
Dude it looks like your blades need more work on the hone. Just be patient, it can take a while for your first blades, until you get the hang of it.
Worst shave, well atm its a cross between my first straight shave 6 months ago (left me with a cool scar on my cheek), the hungover shave i did 3 months ago (not so cool scar on my chin) and the shave i did yesterday after honing....against the grain on my upper lip left very little of my upper lip intact. Went back to the hone today and have achieved a much more acceptable edge on my Puma, sadly i doubt ill be testing its effectiveness for a few days (or until i can get the skin graft).
There was the time before my str8 tho that i used my FX performer with a really dull blade to dry shave off 4 days of growth (i had no foam, no new blades, no money after the rent and a shift in 30 minutes). I think that was the last time i ever cried, everything else pales in comparison.
Those stories bring tears to my eyes....:eek:Quote:

the worst shave I ever had was when I went into horse piddle for minor surgery so I decided to get snipped while I was there
I dont need to go into details but lets say I was given a yellow bic dis with no soap ,I was told to shave in the shower, when I was finished I was loosing quite a bit of blood from around my unmentionables and including my unmentionables.
It is an experience I would rather forget ,and thats all I will say on the matter
Kind regards Peter
