Default First shave with a straight razor

Well tonight was my first shave with a straight razor. I just got home from work and found my 2 razors had arrived from honing by floppyshoes. I felt like a kid at christmas! I opened them up and went to the bathroom to give it a try. Which one to use, hmmm.. I went with the King Cutter.

I lathered up with the shaving soap and put the blade to my cheek nervously. After the first couple of strokes I felt so at ease with the razor, kind of had the feeling that I should have been born in the 20's because it felt so natural to me.

I am definately hooked! I took my time and shaved twice, WTG and then ATG. One thing I noticed was the shaving soap had almost dried on my face I guess from shaving cautiously my first time. I'll have to switch to shaving cream till I can move a little faster with the razor.

After 2 passes my jaw line and upper lip were not as smooth as the rest of my face but I suppose that will get better as my expierience increases. The good news is I didn't knick or cut myself the first time out. Boy, do you ever feel manly when you're shaving with a straight. Thanks to all for the info I've found and used on this site, because you've made my first straight razor expierience a very good one!

Glad to hear your first time was so inviting.

I had issues with the soap drying on my face early on too (not that I'm all that seasoned but drying soap rarely an issue now). I found that was usually from still learning how to make a lather, and from taking so much time to shave while learning. You will get past that in time.

Congrats! Its a lot of fun. I just did my 4th shave yesterday. Each time you get more and more comfortable shaving.

Glad you had a good experience! Floppyshoes taught me everything I know about str8's. I find soap drying a problem only when I don't take the time to properly work the lather. Keep at it!
