Default Making your whiskers stand at attention

My beard grows pretty much parallel to my skin, and stretching does very little to stand it up. I have been experimenting with my lathering procedure so here it is.

    1. Lather (duh)
    2. Strop while it sits
    3. Rub lather in against the grain with fingertips
    4. Relather without rinsing
    5. Shave

The only problem is that by the second pass, the remaining stubble is once again flat against my skin.

I remember seeing an add for some electric pre-shave treatment that is supposed to stand hairs up... Does anyone remember this/know if it works?

    I usually view Baywatch re-runs.

I think I've heard that using alum before lathering can help. But I'm not sure how that'll affect the quality of the lather.

ATG does get me smooth, but leaves me red and bumpy!

I read somewhere that leaving soap/lather on one's face for extended periods of time deprives one's skin of oils, leaves it too dry and as a result ends up in not so stellar shaves. I use some pre-shave products that seem to work better, and I only use lather for actual shaving.

I usually don't have long enough whiskers after the wtg-pass so they would go along the skin: seems to me that they're just stumps just past the skin.

You could always try serious facepulling and stretching to angle the stubble better.

At least to me alum instantly kills the lather and stops brush movement. Once I apply alum, the shave is over.

This is what I'm gonna try:

    Strop
    Shower
    Alum
    Lather
    Shave

    Tomorrow that is

try preshave oil, and see how it works for you.
Easy way to make preshave oil: Castor oil: olive oil 1:1 ratio
