Thread: I tried shaving with a gillette fusion.

So I was downstairs and decided to wash my face with my Van Der Hagen cheapo soap and brush because im trying to clear my face up. While doing so I figured I havn't shaved in a couple days, I'm trying to finish a book so I didn't want to strop the razor and everything so I grabbed a gillette fusion. Somone please explain why because I can't find the answer. It was terrible. I went through the same process as with a straight, WTG XTG and ATG just to compare, and it doesn't stand a chance against my straight. I mean my face feels smooth and all but the feel after a nice straight shave feels soooo much better. Plus it feels more comfortable while shaving with a straight. I don't think I'm going to shave with a Gillette fusion again. Although I am considering getting a decent Double Edge from an antique store. Nothing fancy but somthing to use in case im in a hurry. So just curious using a double edge isn't uncomfortable is it?

I use a DE almost exclusively at the moment (Edwin Jagger 89 - I'd HIGHLY recommend it) and love it - faster than a straight, cheaper, and almost as close. I went back to a Mach 3 a month or 2 after taking up straights and had exactly the same issues as you - an absolutely craptastic shave - I'm never going back to one of those if I can help it.

Regarding comfort, I just had a very quick shave with a DE to test out the lather I'd just made with my new brush - no prep whatsoever, not even a shower, cold lather and cold water, and a blade in the DE with 3 shaves on it already. While I wasn't able to do a full shave due to tugging when I did my usual ATG, after one pass with a Mach 3 under the same conditions my skin would be on fire. One pass from my DE, and there's a little irritation on my neck but I'm otherwise fine. Granted, it wasn't a close shave, or a full shave, but it was still closer and smoother than a M3 would give me.

I have an old gold color Gillette DE that I use when in a hurry. I like it. I think it gives a bit of that "blade on skin" feel that the straight has.

I agree with the above and use my late fathers' de for a quick shave, if the girls are hammering the bathroom door down!! The multi blades do not work as well for me as a straight. Feel pretty smug about that. Channel 9 just did a story on razors and shaving, have just submitted some comments as disapointed that no straights were mentioned. Will update iffen I get an answere back

I'm 55 years old , and when I started shaving the only razors available at the time , besides electric , were DEs , SEs , and injectors . I started with a DE , and didn't like it because the blade seemed to have too much flex to it . Tried a SE , and found it to be a nick maker . I finally settled on an injector , which except for a brief time using a Trac II (which really sucked) I used until I got a Mach 3 . IMHO , nothing but a straight razor , shaves like a straight razor .

Well... just think. You did 15 passes on every part of your face. 5 blades x 3 passes.

I still have my Sub par M3 shaver hanging around and use it once in a while to touch up a spot that may have been missed on the third pass. Most of the time, it can't do any better.

Straight shaving raises your standard as to what qualifies for an acceptable shave.
