What really makes a key difference here is the prep.
What I would do is lather him up, then put a hot towel over the top and leave for few minutes, then do all of that again, then and only then re-lather and start shaving.
One of the key things to do is know which way the beard grows and stretch the skin the other way to make the hairs stand up. This will get a closer shave without needing to do all the WTG/XTG/ATG stuff.
I'd avoid the ATG pass to be honest. Its tricky enough to get right (loads of posts here about people having problems with it) and some peoples skin just doesnt like it anyway. With the correct prep and skin stretching you can get a BBS shave anyway, so you dont need it.
As always keep the pressure very light, make sure your razor is sharp and shave ready and if you're going to go over any areas again, reapply lather before hand.
Good luck!

First you have to examine the beard to determine how it grows and then figure out what stroke is required. Then you have to realize we shave ourselves mostly by feel which in this case you won't have so you have to be careful for cuts and last, to me is getting a comfortable position for both you and your subject to be in.

Lather and shave a taut balloon first. No joke, I've done it. It'll get you used to the sensation of shaving something without feeling the blade on your sown skin. If it pops you'll know you need more practice. When it doesn't, you'll feel a little more confident in your ability to keep from injuring your customer.

I have done it a few times, with good success. Not BBS, but close shaves and no nicks. Here is my Youtube video, in which I shave my oldest boy with an antique ivory scaled Joseph Rodgers, freshly honed on an Escher.
Hope it gives you some ideas about how to proceed.
