Thanked: 11First Shave!!! Wow!!
Heyyy!
Today i had Oz do an amazing job of honing my razor!!! He was kind enough to let me watch, and he gave me some amazing tips for stropping, honing and shaving, and the edge he put on my razor was spectacular!
Anyway, I used a hot shower, lathered up, let it sit for a while, wiped it off, put a hot towel on my face for about 5 minutes, then lathered up again and began my shave. I felt very comfortable doing my right side burn (dominant side), so i progressed down my cheek, I managed to do the entire cheek and side burn area, and i felt pretty comfortable. So I then tried to do the very top area of my neck, just under my ear which went well, so i tried the the upper right half of my upper lip and a small part of my chin, I didnt feel that comfortable doing that, so i only did a very small part of it. I then tried my left side (non-dominant side) using my left hand, which was actually much harder than i thought it would be, I didnt feel that comfortable doing it so i stopped. I then finished off my face with my normal Quatro razor, it was also a good comparison.
After my shave, there was a massive difference between the str8 side and the Quatro side, the str8 side was much much smoother, you could tell even by running my hand over both sides and hearing the sound it made, as well as by touch. I cant wait to feel what a good str8 shave will feel like!! The Quatro also dragged a lot compared to the str8, the str8 cut through my hair like a hot knife through butter
It was an AMAZING shave, i loved every minute of the str8 part . I then cleaned the str8, dried it and oiled the blade and hinge (i got water in it).
I cant wait for my shave tomorrow lol.
Thanks Oz for putting an amazing edge on my straight!!!!! He is a true expert, professional and gentlemen!Last edited by Spartigus; 02-15-2010 at 10:01 AM.

Congrats!
Its very satisfying when you get a good result! It sounds to me like you are on a good path, and have a very able mentor in Oz, which is great..!
With the areas that you are not so comfortable with, dont rush it, just take your time and you will get there. There is a learning process with this hobby, so just enjoy the experience and the results will come..!
Well done and good luck!

Nice one Marco
Great to hear your cherry experience was a good one!
Sounds like you are well on your way in all respects.
In my experience good soap makes an amazing difference.. Try anything Tallow based for the slickest results.
Above all, take your time and enjoy it all, it will only get better.

Congrats man! You will always remember your first shave. One thing, you shouldn't wipe off the lather prior to applying the hot towel. Leave the lather on for that step. It will help with softening the beard. I go throug the stropping after my hot shower so my face tends to cool and dry during the stropping. I build the lather, apply it, then put the hot towel on my face. You can re-lather after removing the towel.

Thanked: 13Sounds like you had great results.
Just take your time and go slow in the areas you feel un-comfortable with. Patience is a virtue when it comes to str8 shaving.
Also, like dward said, don't remove the lather before you use a hot towel. When I shave a customer I always apply lather ( or some other moisturizer) first, and then place the hot towel over it and let it sit for about 2 minutes or so. This helps clean the skin of dirt and oils, open the pores and moisturizes the skin and beard.
Congratulations and enjoy the experience !!Last edited by SRC; 02-16-2010 at 01:19 AM.
