Great Bonding with my oldest Boy!!!
So I have read all kinds of threads, reviews, and how to's...From shaving yourself for the first time, shaving your southern parts, to shaving your wife's legs...But I got to tell you...Having recently moved and not knowing where the saftey razors are for my 15 y/o step son has led me to this post. Tonight I got to experience what alot of fathers should all take time to do...Give your son their first straight razor shave. Although it was only a slight stash to shave off (one that our outdoor cat could have possibly licked off) it was pretty much the coolest bonding we have had together. Coming from someone who's father passed when he was six and learning to shave has litterally become a self taught experience...from the time he said "why don't you just shave me up with your straight razor Bubba?" to my wife saying "No Way...Look at the scars you have put on your face." to whipping up some Uber lather thanks to Jockeyes, the whole experience was probably the best...I can't wait to hook him up again and teach him the proper way to shave. I am already thinking of having a special razor of mine honed especially for him...Damn I got to say it was cool.
For all you dad's out there take advantage of passing this on even if your wife doesn't agree...Sneak it in...Your son will really thank you!

Thanked: 2Good for you Sir! I must say that two weeks ago I helped my teenage son with his first shave. The bonding was excellent and he thought using his great-great grandfathers shaving mug was super cool.

My sons just turning 12 next month and can't wait to shave.
We were having a problem with him licking his face around his mouth and causing a rash that was just not going away. Trying to get him to wash his face on a regular basis was just a no-go unless we were going to hold his hands 24/7 until I told him I was going to use MY brush and soap.
He thought that was the coolest thing he'd ever done. The rash went away in a couple of days. Now to have him work up the lather by himself. Think I'll start that this morning .
He also wanted me to hang some razors in his room so I took a couple of junkers, dulled the blades then covered them with plastic tubing and hung them from a peice of scrap wood I had. He loves it. Check it out on page 17 of "Shave Den Again" under brushes.

Great story Bubba! I remember when I started shaving and how I perceived it as passage into manhood. My son lives with his Mom, my ex. A couple of years ago, at age 13, he asked of he could use my razor. I was surprised at how time had flown by and pleased that he let me know he was shaving. I dug out my Dad's Gillette Super Speed and asked him if he wanted to try using it. It was the razor I learned on. He was anxious to use it so we ran to the Drug store to try and find blades. I stopped using it in the 70's when I couldn't find blades for it any more. Jr loved it! Then I remembered that I had 5 straights I won at a local auction and broke them out and started to learn about straight razors on the web, which didn't exist when I got the straights. After learning to hone and then shave I let Jr try. He took it slow starting with just his side burns and cheeks all the while watching me shave with a straight. Now he has mastered the straight razor. If his Mom knew she would kill me and then drag my a?? back to court again.
Every other weekend when he is over we pick different straight razors to shave with together. He now has a collection of safety razors and I have a collection of straights that will be passed on to him when the day comes. We are also doing restores and honing together! It's a great father and son bonding and I wish all fathers the same joy my son and I get form this 'sport'! Make the best of you time with you step son and good luck sharing his entry into manhood!“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Your son will never forget. I really enjoyed teaching my stepson about straight razors and giving him a couple of shaves-they were bonding experiences like yours. Too bad he has 4 and 5 year old children, or I would give him a straight razor and kit, but the risk is too great that one of the boys will get hold of it and cut himself, IMO. So I gave him a Gillette Fat Boy instead. Some day I think he will ask me to teach him how to shave himself, when the kids are older, but he is a little too nervous about the idea right now.
