Convincing the Brother
So to make short and quick I'm trying to convince the older brother to switch to a str8 razor with a shaving demonstration and informative facts, any suggestions or interesting factoids?... other than the all the newb stuff I've read and watched already.

factoids? I would start with this: Straight razor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is how god wanted us to shave...anything else may usher in the Apocalypse.
In my experience, most folks due to current US culture, are scared to death of razors for some reason...too many mobster movies I suppose. I have yet to convert anybody, nor have I heard of any other successful conversion. It would be interesting to know if there have been any conversions that 'take'.

Thanked: 5Well, my brother got me started a couple of months ago, and I can't say how much I've appreciated it. He just gave me a small starter kit: A razor, a couple of inexpensive soaps, a good boar brush, and a starter strop and let me go with it. To this point I've gone almost exclusively with my str8 (except one morning when I had less than 15min to get to work).
It has actually given us something in common, when we hadn't really had much to talk about for the past several years. I hope that you have a similar experience with your brother.Last edited by Jrichmond; 03-12-2010 at 03:52 AM.

Thanked: 363James2,
Ha here's some irony, I'm getting my younger brother into this and his name is James, and he recently moved to Texas. I'm the oldest, and have been shaving for over a 1 1/2 years.
I tried by showing him while he was here in the NE, and by showing enthusiasm for it, plus he has a very similar beard as mine, so that helps. A straight tends to be the only thing that works for this type of thick wiry beard. Maybe comfortability is an angle to purse with him?
Cheers
David

I am actually going to try to convert my best friend from high school this weekend he has showed some interest when we talk and I kid him about how us real men shave as I put it so I am taking a kit to him from my personal stuff and give him a demonstration and all that and I have also told him about the site and have told him to read everything he can on here and watch all the videos he can on here

Thanked: 14My younger brother asked me if he could try one of my razors after knowing that I have used one for years. He liked it and I found him a nice Puma with a chipped blade and broken scales off eBay, the seller also threw in a Reynolds, also with a chipped blade.
I restored both and put some Sheoak scales on the Puma. He loves them. The Puma is really nice, I wish I could have kept it.

Challenging but not impossible
Seems like I might have a tough time persuading my brother based on everyone's experience, but we do both have thick beards and have always had a close relationship so I think once he feels that smooth skin on his face and learns about the benefit of the badger and blade on skin condition he will see the light...I let y'all know how it goes. thanks

Nice way to reconnect!
I'm in a similar situation with my older brother.
What I have done is this:
I invited him over and showed him all my new gear.
Him being an engineer like me, I knew that would tickle his senses
I gave him a demonstration of a nice shave and I could see him getting interrested.
The thing that sold him though was the honing process, and the equipment that goes with it.
He is a bit strapped moneywise, but I offered him some of my stuff to practice with, and now he is in "boot camp"
He calls me daily now for tips and information
I've been trying to get him to log on here, but the internet is not quite his thing.
I'll get him in here eventually though!Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....
