how-to-shave-costs-on-razors: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance
Sixth Paragraph down: Razor makers, I have news for you. A razor is not a sports car. It won't make us feel young again or turn women's heads. We don't like shaving, and no matter what you do, we never will. All we want is a razor that will do the job without nicking us, either literally or figuratively.

Hmm, I find women do a double take when I tell them I use a straight.
I get a wink and a blush when I offer to do their legs, barber style.
No Gilette or Schick will ever do that.

03-19-2010, 12:10 AM #3To be fair to Gillette, I agreed to try out its latest, greatest razor. So Gillette sent me a Fusion ProGlide Power razor, a five-blade razor that hits the market in June. It will have a suggested retail price of $12.99 for a razor and two cartridges. A four-pack of refills will cost $17.99.
I used the new razor over the weekend before sending it back to Gillette. It was a closer shave. But when I finished, the smooth face I saw peering back in the mirror was still my own, not George Clooney's. And I'd still feel like a sap spending $4.50 each time I changed blades.

Thanked: 1195Well, if the only shaving options that exist are cartridges and disposables, as the author seems to believe, why would you have a reason to not despise shaving?
Unfortunately most guys probably aren't aware, like the author, that there is anything other than Gillette products and electrics for them to shave with. Besides, why would anyone use a straight razor? You could get "nicked, either literally or figuratively".

Haha! You cant beat a straight razor! I always laugh when I go to the shops and see the refills going for £12 a set...!
Though if too many people start using straights, it'll push the eBay prices right up...

I have to say that starting to use a straight razor has really been a life changing experience in terms of my grooming process. I use to put off shaving when I used a Gillette cartridge, just because the whole experience stunk.
Now, even on the rare occasions that I sport some clooney stuble, it is only for good reason, and I eagerly wait to get the time to have a nice straight shave.
I'd say that cost efficiency is relative. As someone pointed out RAD can be a problem in that area, I know it is for me. Then you have all the HAD people. However, I don't mind, because as I dump my wallet on new straight razors and accessories, I find comfort knowing that this products will out live me, and that some day I can teach my grand kids out to straight shave.
here's to the pleasures of a straight shave, and the seemingly lost practice of family heirlooms, in my generation at least.

Thanked: 155Anyone who depends on the type of car they drive or the type of razor they use for self validation needs to get a life. I do drive a sports car, and I do use a straight razor, but I don't care what other people think about it. I do not need their approval to do what I want and others disapproval will not prevent me from doing what I want.

Likewise! I don't read B&B but linked it in case he at least wants to try DE razors.
Neal,
I appreciated your WSJ article on razors, which I caught through Yahoo!'s finance portal. You might have already received a few responses about the old-time alternatives and are probably a bit surprised that a razor-enthusiast market even exists. I shave both my head and my face so I'm sure you could understand my need for a less expensive alternative.
Well, I found an alternative that is cheaper in the long run, provided you don't start actually enjoying buying new razors. Straight razors are a great way to stick it to Gillette and Schick for their overpriced, overmarketed, over-bladed razors. Even if straight razors seem a bit extreme you can look at a good ol' double-edged razor (think of the original Gillettes) which use replaceable blades that will probably run 50¢ or less, each.
I've now seen both sides of this coin:
"A razor is not a sports car. It won't make us feel young again or turn women's heads. We don't like shaving, and no matter what you do, we never will."
Years ago I would have agreed entirely with that statement, but now I enjoy shaving with straight razors and my wife loves it as well (on me). I wouldn't say that it makes me feel any younger, but I do feel better and, quite honestly, it's pretty damn cool. I even shave with a razor that once belonged to my great grandfather!
When random people express sympathy for how much I much spend in razors to shave my head, I always strike up an interesting and unusually-long conversation about shaving with a straight. It's worth looking into, even if it might not be something for you.

Cheers!
