Thanked: 1587Well, in theory you will get no better shave than with a straight. I believe that is an undeniable fact. The reason I believe this is that with a straight you have complete control over everything to do with the shave: from preparing the edge to directing the angle of the blade on your face and everything in between.
You really have no control over the minutiae of the shave with DEs, cartridges, etc. Sure, some pivot, some let you adjust the blade, some even vibrate. But none allow the complete and utter control that a straight razor gives you.
So when you ask if a straight gives the closest shave, my answer would be "depends how good you are with it". They certainly, as has been mentioned before, have the potential to give the best shave, but the real question is "are you prepared to put in the time and effort to unlock that potential?" If the answer is yes, you are on your way to a real treat!
