Thanked: 2259In search of...
No, not Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, I'm on a quest for the perfect shave... And I'm finding it quite elusive!
I used to be very happy with a DE shave, but I've been blown away by the shave I get with a straight... So much so that I'm in search of perfection, and we all know how hard that can be to obtain.
There has always been a tiny spot on my neck where the hair grows in an odd manner, and has always given me trouble. Today, I went counter to the accepted practice of skin stretching, and scrunched the skin down. That was when I felt the hairs after shaving, so I tried to shave the area that way, and it worked! Still not perfection, but better...
So, I've found that shaving is akin to the old axiom... "The more we know, the less we know.."
The closer shave I obtain, the further from a BBS shave I become!
One of life's conundrums?
Has anyone else felt this seeming controversy??? Or is my OCD out of control?

I don't think your OCD OUt of control.
it is normal development. One day you will hit the point that which will satisfy you.
Then you will say this is it . i got what i was looking for.
Remember great shave doesn't depends only from sharpness of your blade or just how you strop blade or preparation for the shave,
it depends a lot more factors. The day you will combine them all and get the result you want you will be very happy straight razor shaver. gl

How did you scrunch your skin down?
Personally I like a nice shave, but I'm not really looking for perfectionFind me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

Maybe scrunch was a poor word to use..
Instead of putting my chin up and stretching, I merely put my chin down, and since I'm getting older and have developed a neck like a chicken, the problem area was protruding nicely.
A few light strokes over the fold, and Voila... Nice and smooth!
BTW, the title was supposed to be "In Search of"... Perhaps a Mod could insert an "n" for me to mask my inaccurate typing skills?Last edited by BlacknTan; 07-01-2010 at 02:39 PM.

Thanked: 1936That perfect shave is the mastering of all steps of shaving. You will get where you want to be one day...then you will scratch your head wondering how come it took so long...at least I did. Finding the right soap for you & your water, blade keenness, proper beard prep, proper stretching, proper blade technique "for you", & proper post shave "for you & your skin" has to all come together. I'm sure I left something out, but you don't have to have the stars aligned just right is the good news!!

Thanked: 24I have been told (by my dad) "that a job done right should not have to be done again"... That being said, Ithink I shall never be be able to have the perfect shave...as it tends to grow back out within a day...not to perfect but awfully close...

With so many variations of facial features, there's just no way for the wiki to cover everything...it just gives you a good starting point. At some point, you have to experiment and go off on a ledge on some 'homemade techniques'...this is quite normal IMHO. One thing you should be proud of is that you're comfortable at this point in the game to step out of the box and try something that isn't mentioned elsewhere to get the shave you want. Personally, I have to pinch and roll bits of my neck in order to roll the hairs away from the skin since they grow too close to the skin for any shaving device to get.
