Razor over sharpened?
Fella's
I have a new puma that was honed by Lynn. It shaves SO GREAT, what a razor!!! But… because I am always thinking things could be better, I decided to make it even sharper after a few shaves by running the blade across some diamond paste. The latest shave was great but left some starting marks on me. (i.e. where I started my pass, there are long, noticeable marks obviously from the str8) Is it possible the blade is too sharp? Also, my face was feeling it all day. In fact, after using a st8 everyday for the last few months, I had to take a day off today… grrrr!
Thanks, Gabriel

Thanked: 0Are you pushing too hard or using too great of an angle, by any chance?
Just a thought.

I don't think so... This is the first time I have ever encountered anything like this, hence the post.

Thanked: 0Hmm...
Then I guess it's possible that you've got yourself a hell of an edge there, if this just started happening.
The only other things I can think of:
What kind of cream/soap do you use? Maybe if you go for something moisturizing/cooling it will help the irritation, and if it's a dense, silky lather it might help the razor slide easier. I use Proraso and find it to be absolutely amazing..their pre/post shave cream adds a little slick lubrication before the lather, which could help you a bit maybe? I have found it to be an outstanding product when used in conjuction with the Proraso soap and aftershave balm. It really keeps the razor moving smoothly, and irritation for me has been ZERO.
Have you tried messing around with your water/cream-soap ratio to see if it helps any?
Sounds like you may have to play around with your setup a bit to see what works for you to keep that baby gliding, or wait till the edge tones down a bit for you..maybe just strop without the paste, or at least use the pasted strop a little less?
Just tossing some ideas out there for ya..

I know there have been some posts about over-sharpened razors but never thought, as a relative newbie, I would ever run across this problem. The blade easily passes all of the "tests." I usually don't use the pasted strop unless I my blades don't pass the tests. (except in this case) Maybe I was overly-excited to use the diamond paste? At least I know the diamond paste works!
I use prorasso too. The only reason I didn't shave today was because of the "starting marks" on my face.

Yeah, maybe you hit it with the paste a little too soon. Ah well, live and learn. Just back off on it for now and try to get a feel for how often to use it, and you'll be golden.
Hey, at least you're learning quick. With a razor that sharp, all that's left now is getting that feel for when to stop the stropping/honing so that the edge is just right.
Sounds like you've got things down pretty well, and just need to get that 'feel'. I'm working on that myself.
Sounds like with a little trial and error you'll be all set!

Thanked: 28I think he took the edge off the razr with the paste...in my experience faces dont get irritated because of a razr being to sharp ...just the opposite ...I agree angle may have been too great or too much pressure on blade...

With all do respect, it's definately not dulled. My irritation is more like when you first start shaving and the skin is not acustomed to the str8. In fact it's fine today. The shave was incredible actually, minus the "starting marks" it left (2) on my face.

Thanked: 28I certainly mean no offense...starting marks on your face means either not sharp too great of an angle or too much pressure...lynn tutored me in person for hours and while Im far from an expert or as knowledgeable as some of the guys on this forum and I mean that respectfully...with lynn's tutalidge my razrs are unbelievably sharp scary sharp! and I have never left marks on my face...are you stretching your skin to the max?

Everything the same hence the post. Oh well, I'm sure everyone here has run into some bumps-in-the-road here and there. Like I said, my shave was normal and smooth, but these marks showed up later that day... weird. Maybe there was some remnance of the paste still on the blade that caused the irritation?
