Thanked: 0New Straight Razor Recap
Yesterday, I posted that I received my new razor from the classifieds. Well here are the results of that first shave.
Let me tell you, it was one of the most enjoyable shaves that I've had thus far. I now know what a a sharp razor should feel and look like.
Since I have a tough beard, I shower, hot towel my face, pre-shave oil, then lather.
My technique still needs improving but hey that comes in time. I'm utterly flabbergasted at the shave. Almost bbs.
Here's the equipment list:
Keen Kutter 5/8's
Art of shaving pre shave oil
Col Conk's bay rum later
Carbtree & Evelyn badger hair brush.
Illinois 361 strop
Don't worry I'm going to hit up CarrieM's & Mama Bears shave soaps shortly. Been reading a lot about both of them. I'm also looking at getting a (SRD) 3" latigo strop. So many toys... So many toys .. I got bit rather hard.
Anything else I'm missing?

No restoration supplies? No stones?
Seriously, it sounds like you have everything covered for the immediate future. Get your gear, practice, check out the wiki, and keep us posted with progress or any other questions you might have!

Thanked: 0Commiecat,
I have several hones ( Arkansas surgical soft hard). Listed them in my first post.
Let's just say that Lynn has one of my straights that he is honing.
Straight Razors are a bit different than EDC knives.

Matt,
It sounds like your good to go...Congratulations.
All you need now is some witch hazel (astringent) and some aftershave to finish up those awesome shaves. You can get both items at your local drugstore or a discount store such as Wal-Mart.
Take care--and continued smooth shaving."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

The only thing you are missing is an $8.00 VDH brush
and a puck of Williams shave soap.
I can tell you that part of an afternoon spent learning
to lather with these classic tools taught me volumes
and improved my shave by large measures. No shaving
just lathering and tinkering... Too much water, too little,
dry brush, wet brush, hot water, cold water.
In my limited experience (Larry King is older than me)
lathering is a big part of a great shave.
