deep,
I have thick and heavy growth too, and my neck hair grows sideways and upwards, on the bottom half of my neck. So, I shave my neck from the jaw to the half with the normal razor motion, and at the bottom half I hold the razor upwards. I shave with two passes, both with the grain. I won't suggest you try against the grain with heavy growth untill you got some experience with the straight razor shaving and maintainance. So, for this year, you can perfect your technique of both shaving and sharpening, getting the right feel for the blade on your face, that means no pressure onto skin, and next year or so, you can try across and against the grain passes, which in my opinion are unnecesary...
have fun,

I think just about all of us find the neck to be the most challenging area to shave. For me the only way to get a baby's butt smooth shave I have to go E-W across my neck which is impossible. I've tried all kinds of wierd angles and maneuvers and though the shave is quite acceptable its not perfect. If I want to go to that final degree I have a Japanese traditional straight which has a fixed blade much shorter than our usual straights and with that I can go straight across. Only problem is its a right handed razor and using it requires more practice and finesee than I am willing to give it. So I reserve it for rare occassions and brief use at that.
