    Thumbs up who knew more..when?

Any thoughts to what people knew on the main shave sites here...
Compared to the years when straight razors and SE/DE razors were "what you had then"...like a grandchild asking his grandfather what he used when he was a "young lad"...
For me...I was self taught in everything to do with shaving...my dad was in the service in NAM and can barely recall using a Gillette DE..today he uses an electric n "deals" with his redness and un-closeness but whatever makes him happy...
My grandfathers never said much to me...including my grandmothers surviving the holocaust..other than "what we had" and "whatever was cheap"..but before WWII..my dad's dad fought in the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) in 1967.
I assume he used a DE then..non Superspeed razors compared to the 1970's when they were an option...I'm sure today it's plastic all the way as issued to IDF.

I taught myself to shave with a Mach 3, and more recently a straight. I'm actually teaching my dad to use a straight at the moment lol..!

I got my brother a DE for his birthday as well. He wanted something where the blades werent a fiver a time, so that seemed like a good gift..! I want to get him onto straight razors as well if I can, so I think I might gift him one of my eBay wins once I've cleaned it up and see if I can get him hooked.

I would say people are more educated now and have more resources.

I would say shaving with a straight razor is more of a hobby if you are on this site.

That is really cool. It's not too often the child can teach the parent something and the parent is open to it.

It is funny but shaving is one of those things that I, and I think most men, think is something they should know by instinct. I began self taught shaving in the early 1960s with the Gillette DE and their blue blades. Those were brutal and I still remember how much I appreciated the Platinum Plus and Super Stainless when they came out with them. I didn't learn how to shave properly until I was in my late '50s and came to the shaving forums. It seems odd that I can get a better shave with no irritation or nicks with a straight razor than with a DE but that is the way it is. Who would have thunk it ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Ya know, when you stop to think of it in terms of area shaved most women do more shaving then men do.

being the only man in my family.. my first shave was a single blade pink disposable and some type of foam.. i then got my grandma to buy me a gillette sensor and a can of barbasol.. i always had horrid shaves.. up until i got a mach3 at the age of 19 and started using a brush.. just got into the feather artist club at the beginning of the year and now i have just about every kind of acquisition disorder you can think of.

you know.. that's funny.. i can fully recall wondering why women would shave their entire legs with those single blades when i only had to shave my face and i needed at the very least 2 blades.

True, but that is balanced by the for more finesse in men. The face is a more sensitive area than the legs. Also, besides the knee/back of the knee the legs are pretty much just runways. I'm not trying to talk down to women shavers of course, I'm merely stating that it seems like a fair trade-off for both parties.
