Thanked: 1195In the Age of the Straight I highly doubt there were many hobby shavers who prided themselves on knowing everything there is to know about straight razors. It was simply shaving. Most guys had only one or two razors, one strop, one brush. Many may not have even owned a single razor hone, as it was popular for your trusty barber to touch up your razor for you. So there probably wasn't as much thought being put into the entire process.
I would guess that we know more now. As experienced? Perhaps not.

Thanked: 983I would disagree with you. I started straight shaving (theoretically) long before this site was in existence, and though it wasn't successful for me back then, I persisted off and on over those years. I was finally successful about two weeks before finding this site and had shaved everyday with a cut-throat until that time. This site has done what any father would have done, had I had one around in my early shaving years. It has taught me how to shave properly, and how to care for my blades. No more, no less.
I use an open razor not for the convenience, not for a hobby, but for the desire to slow the pace of (modern) life down just a little, to live in the past for a little while, to achieve a close shave that lasts, you can't beat a straight, something I've come to learn. Straight shaving is simply the way shaving is meant to be for me. Far from a hobby, sport or a past-time, it's a daily routine.

There's no way one person could have the same amalgamation of shaving, hones from all parts of the world, honing, restoring, custom razor making etc. etc. info that these forums give.
If you only use this site for shaving techniques you have only scratched the surface of the knowledge these forums offer.
If that's all you need/want, there's nothing wrong with that of course.
The wiki is a great example of a quick and easy source of very specific topics. Quite useful if you are looking for a succinct answer, but still it doesn't encompass the depth and breadth of the knowledge present in this constantly evolving community.
These forums amaze me constantly, and the more I learn the less I know.

Thanked: 983I know what you are saying Joke1176, and you are correct, I have simply learnt all I require for now. I know there is a lot more information on the site and I have learnt more than what my old man could have taught me with regards to honing. Restoration, custom building and all that has to wait until I have time to get back to my hobby of knife making. Shaving isn't a hobby, nor is it a chore, it is for me, simply an enjoyable morning routine for reasons previously described.
So, yes, I have, for now, got what I need from the site. Which isn't to say that I've stopped learning from the site, I most certainly am learning things, just that what I'm learning is being filed away for possible future use.

P.S I'm one of these two razors in rotation, strop, brush and couple of hones minimalist type people.Last edited by MickR; 07-16-2010 at 01:55 AM. Reason: To add a P.S

Neither my father nor my older brother felt any need to teach me how to shave; I was left to my own devices. Hence, from the age of 17 to the age of 39 or 40, I shaved my face the same way I hoed a garden (not a pretty sight -- spent lots of $$$ on styptic pencils).
I finally figured out on my own that the goal of shaving was to slice off the hair *without* slicing off the top ten layers of skin. I also figured out on my own (at the age of 40) that a WTG pass followed by an ATG pass was the way to go for a close shave w/o razor burn.
All I can say is "Thank GOD" for the founders of SRP & the SRP Wiki! You folks have taught me what I need to fulfill my lifelong desire to shave with a straight!
Namaste,
Morty -_-

Thanked: 983With a touch of, "Wish I could justify buying that Dovo Renaissance to SWMBO" . I wouldn't say no to more razors, but I just don't see the need...For now! That would be the hobby side of the equation. I've promised SWMBO, to keep my shiny, sharp shit collecting limited to Military bladeware only. Find me a military issue straight, and I could justify its addition to the collection.
