    Default What Do You Think?

I see a ton of guys logging on to take advantage of the razor give away, and I think that is great. But I was thinking this morning as I was shaving how hard it was to learn how to shave with my first razors. I thought I had sharpened them wonderfully and they would dry shave my arm like nobody’s business. Then with time and continued practice I finally got my razors to cut the dreaded hanging hair.
The shaving got a whole lot easier and better. I think it is important to at least help these guys understand how important a SHARP razor is. We might offer in a more open forum to hone for these guys or make sure they are directed to the honing forums as much as other forums.
I understand the difficulty of learning to hone. I still fight with some of my razors. I also learned on the less important razors in my collection. But I do think it will help guys get a better understanding of what a good shave is and make it easier for them to learn to shave without nicking themselves so much. Thus allowing them to enjoy the straight shave and continue for life.

    What do you think?

I am nowhere near that level where I can be messing with other people's shaving implements. However, it was a big boost to my technique when a senior member here gave me a few pointers in person and helped me correct my honing and stropping techniques. Once I do gain the right level of confidence in my technique, ofcourse I'll be willing to do the same for future SRP n00bs if they're willing to make a trip to downtown Toronto.

    Hi Phillip,

The whole point of the straight razor give away is to help our new folks know what a honed razor feels like. This not only helps in the shaving effort, but provides a baseline for their honing. Virtually all the other forums are a take off of this forum. Most of the experts from the other forums got their start in straight razor shaving right here. The honing information provided by the membership here is superior to anything I have seen anywhere else and continues to set the standard. In addition, the members here including myself have been honing razors free for new people for years in addition to providing new people with razors when they could not buy one for whatever reason. This forum has helped thousands of people learn to shave with a straight razor plus helped them learn to strop, maintain a razor and hone. Many of our members give out their phone numbers and speak to new people for as long as it takes to answer all their questions. Some of our members have been able to meet and help people in person.

The things you are talking about are the principles from which Straightrazorplace was founded upon going on 6 years ago.

    Enjoy and have fun!

i am really serious about learning to hone and everybody i have PM'd have been more than helpful, offering their phone numbers for me to call and ask questions. the people that are in the giveaway that are serious about learning about straight razors have more than enough help here on the forums if they ask...there is a forum set up for questions! now if they actually end up trying to learn...that is a different subject. i'm sure some just are in it for a free razor but the ones that want to learn about this have plenty of opportunities.

edit - I think i might know what you are talking about....maybe encourage the people to ask questions in the forums, let them know there is more to shaving than just getting a razor?

I think a lot of the new guys found out about the giveaway, jumped in to register, and are now sitting at home waiting for an emai to tell them they have won! They didn't drop back by to discover the strop giveaway.

I have to admit, I would love to be a winner also, but I'm not throwing my name in the hat. This site has already given me SO much more than I could ever pay back. Not just in straight and strop advice, but in friendship as well.

I agree... Even if I don't win anything, I'm still glad for all the information I found here and also for the community spirit that I got to enjoy here and that I'll hopefully keep on enjoying. I have 2 reasons why I went in for both giveaways:
    1) I got as far as my honing skill/equipment will take me, so I'd like to see how much farther I have to go. In any case I only have one razor that I'm sure could make a good shaver. The other one is still under deliberation.
    2) I'm using the canvas from the strop I got with the Pakistani and my best leather belt for stropping. I'd like to relegate the pakistani strop to the role of a training aid and the belt back to my wardrobe.

    Thanks Terry,

Never left just in my busy season. I still read just not to much time to post.

I know how much help all you guys have been to me in learning everything about straight shaving, and I appreciate it very much. I also know as a newbie just how exciting it is to get that shiny piece of metal in your hand too. I just want the rest of the new guys to have a great experience and enjoy shaving as much as I do.

You guys have been great to me and I love yall ( not in a Broke Back way)

I believe you may have just coined a new phrase.
