Default Straight Razor Shaving... Riding a bicycle or golf?

Almost anyone who wishes can ride a bicycle competently. Not everyone can become a low handicap golfer. So, recognizing that there is proper technique involved in a straight razor shave, is desire to succeed enough, or are some destined to never be proficient?

    Just wondering.

    Bicycle,,

You always have to keep this in the back of your brain...Men did this for YEARS, it isn't all that hard..

We (Many on SRP) have made this into much more than just shaving, it is a Hobby, a Passion, for many of us, so we take it way more into the esoteric then needed...

Actual shaving can be done with 1 strop, 2 razors, and one touch up stone, 1 boar brush, and puck of shave soap...That is all you NEED the rest is WANT...

    I agree, bicycle.

But becoming a pro in the skills, maybe that is more like golf

Although SR is not for everybody, and yes some will give it up completely, the majority will go on to get great shaves and enjoyment. Desire to succeed plays a big part IMO as well.

I suspect the quitters are able to do so with little regret as there are so many other shaving options. It's not like the golden days, when a straight was your only choice.

I don't see it a being any different than anything else. There are alot of people out there driving cars and they have a license but should they?

You can use a straight and not be all that proficient and still get by and I suspect that's how it was years ago.

So like everything else you have the option of getting by or becoming truly proficient.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I have to do everything the hard way.

I can ride a bicycle but broke a leg riding one once.

I can straight shave but once when I started I focused so hard on the shave that the thumb of my opposite hand got in the way and I had to get 4 stitches.

I didn't give up either, and I got pretty doggone close to a BBS shave today.

maybe i'm an idiot.. but i don't see why anyone can't become a low handycap golfer.. i feel as if you can become great at anything if you devote yourself to learning.. as of right now i can't oil paint a thing.. i've never even tried.. but if i were to go and get the paints, brushes, canvases, and whatever else i'm supposed to have.. and then sit down and paint or take classes or whatever else i'm supposed to do.. i could become i wonderful oil painter within a few years.. it just takes the will and the want. your mom wasn't lying when she said you could be anything you wanted.
