Tried a "new" razor
Yesterday I received a Midnight Quatro (?) razor. It has 4 blades. Now mind you I haven't shaved with a cartridge razor in about 5 years. I used a Sensor 2 bladed razor before switching to an electric. I got the razor for free in the mail and I thought since I'll be in a hurry in the morning I'll just use it, it'll be quick and easy and I'll get to test it out. OMG! I was only able to make 2 strokes before I gave up. The pulling was intolerable! How the hell do guys shave with those things? I went to my DE and it was pulling a little too, what the heck has happened? All those days of whining about getting a straight smoother and smoother and here I was forgetting to compare it to what everybody else uses! I had to finish using my straight. I was even late for my carpool. I have a new respect for you newbies. How the heck have you been doing it? I thought my straights were pulling a little, and now I have a completely different view. I'm pretty certain razors were much smoother just 5 years ago. What was all that 4 bladed hype about?

It boggles the mind how people can believe that the way to solve one bad blade not shaving well is too add on a bunch more bad blades. I think I get more razor burn from a mach 3 than from the disposable one bladed bics, and they've just added two more blades to the mach 3, Ouch .

Alan,
I have to wonder if after using either a straight or
DE for sometime if you would have to recondition
your face to a multi blade again? Could also be a
disposable is not as good as an actual cartridge?
I've used a straight now since January 28th. About
a month ago I went out of town for a couple of
days and took my DE, a 1956 Gillette Superspeed.
I shaved on the last morning before leaving for home.
I was using a Merkur blade and Proraso pre/post and
Proraso soap. When I made the first pass I thought I
had forgotten to put the blade in, it was that smooth.

I've always thought those extra blades would drag on the face with the first removing the lather. It felt just like that, the blades dragging over an unlathered face.

I have often wondered about this. They must be of lower quality or else they would actually cost more than just a pack of cartridges. I normally find packages of disposable razors to cost a good deal less than cartridges alone. The only way I can figure they make that much more material cost less is to have the cost and therefore quality of the actual blades be lower.

Thanked: 324I can't get a shave as close or comfortable with a DE either and there's no way I'm putting a disposable cartridge razor back on my face again. After shaving with a bunch of different straight razors, I'll be the first to admit, I'm awfully picky about what I shave with these days and if a razor pulls or doesn't shave close, I set it aside for later examination and correction and grab one that will.

I've been playing with a DE I purchased (read stole) from Tony Miller. I'd never shaved with a DE, so his offer was too good to pass up. I find the quality of the shave isn't quite as good, but it's significantly better than the Mach III. I've been experimenting with using the DE for the with- and across-the-grain passes, the using the straight for an against the grain pass with great results.
My wife tried the women's Quattro and found the shave to be worse than the Venus (ladies Mach 3). I've heard similar complaints from other women as well that the 4 blade model doesn't shave as well as the 3 blade model.

I stopped using the machs, shicks and other disposable crap when I was 16. They irritated my face too much and I didn't have half the facial growth that I have now. I may try shaving with one out of morbid curiosity, but I'm counting on you guys to smack me when I start whining and complaining about the bad shave and irritation lol.

I havent stopped shaving with a straight since I started. I travel often and fly weekly most months, so as most of you know I have even started checking my bags so I can bring my straight. You know its a labor of love when its worth dealing with the TSA and all the extra time at baggage claim. but that is how much better the shave makes me feel with as straight than anything else. now I just walk down the shaving section in the stores on my way to get to another isle and simply pitty the fools who stand there debating over witch over priced torture device they should but this time...
