Thread: Straight Razor Ain't Cutting It

This may be a long shot, but I wonder if you are dragging the edge at an obtuse angle to the skin. If the 30 degree rule is misinterpreted to actually be a 150 degree angle, this could account for narry a whisker being cut while the whole time keeping what is apparently a 30 degree angle. It would also account for the fact that you don't mention that going ATG with heavy stubble and not cutting whiskers is causing you exquisite pain. All those things make sense if it turns out you're trying to shave using the razor in a strop action. Sounds silly, but I've found in life that you can never assume anything.

Well Flyman, someone close to me who knows nothing about straight shaving taught i was doing it like you described, 150°. After being shocked by what 30° meant, his excitement about straight shaving totally disapeared and was replaced by a big doubt about the sincerity of my taste for a healthy long living! lol

tutorials
I see you talked about watching tutorials. Being new to this myself about same amount of time as you I watch as many as I could. If you go on YouTube there is a member on these forums I believe Jockey who has great video tutorials I have to say his helped me out the most I can not say enough good things about them. Give those a look and see if they help you out as much as they did me. Good luck and stick with it the shaves will get better and soon you will look forward to the nice relaxing moments you get while shaving
