Thread: First Straight Shave

I think that may have been my initial instinct, ya. I probably started out consciously thinking "light touch, 30 degrees, wtg, etc" but as I got further into the shave it's just instinct taking over and I probably pressed too hard.
I did my second shave last night and it turned out much much better than my first, but I still found that there was resistance from the hair, though. After watching some youtube videos I realized that while it does pass the HHT, it isn't doing it with as much ease as it should. I'm going to get it honed by a local guy here who knows what he is doing and i'll also get some pointers from him (dnjrboy on the forums). Hopefully that helps ease things up a bit, but I didn't get any redface after last nights shave, which is a sign that I am improving. I think it's just a matter of time and technique before I'll be good, but I want to check out the antique shops around town and see if I cant find a cheaper razor to practice honing on.
Last night I also lathered my face in sections and that helped as well. I had a sample of shaving cream, and I tried it but found it was just too hard to get a consistently good lather out of it. It just felt like my brush was "eating" it and not making a nice thick lather. It definately is tricky working up a proper lather with the right amount of water in it, but when it turns out right, it's just perfect.
